that's a bunch of Amiga's running protracker.

From the sound I was thinking exactly the same, but nope Atari's had Protracker as well !

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

There are some pretty good videos on YouTube in which Rob Hubbard talks about how, back in the day, musicians who composed music for computer games had to write their own routines to effectively make a combined song player and real time patch wirer. Some of these even got to the point where some parts of the music were other parts which had been modified in between iterations. So it's kind of like fractal music almost, with recursion and I think possibly self modification of the code, although I'm not sure about that last part. If they assembled it on paper, or wrote directly in machine code instead of assembly (tricky but certainly possible, I still remember to this day that for the 6502 / 6510 instruction set, A9 loads the next byte into the accumulator, from just a few weeks of mucking around with machine code), then it's at least plausible. This is the kind of "write the algorithm, not the music" approach that Brian Eno seems to talk about a fair bit, only with some proper hands-on, getting-dirty programming.

Anyway, here's the main talk he gives:

I think we did a big chin waggle about the Sid a few months back

EDIT: Ooops, yeah and it was me that did it as well :emb: (albeit drunkly) - http://forum.watmm.com/topic/65564-the-sid-chip-65818580/

Damn that's some nice shit there bro - why you sell it all?

Don't get cooler than this ......... I actually spoke to Tim on the phone and he said he hated the limitations back then. He went on to make some fairly mediocre music since then but back in the day on the Atari Tim was defo the man!!

did you actually use all that stuff, osc? or just look at it? ;)

such a lot of classic, awesome gear! where are the tracks? and how the fuck did you ever afford all that?

bank loan? or 'hand-me-downs' ?...

I still prefer Jonathan Dunn's original C64 version of the Robocop game theme:

Even though the Game Boy one was the version used in the Ariston advert:

There's a thread about it over at The Ocean Experience forum.

I vaguely remember about ten years ago, getting my computer via a SCSI card to talk to my Akai S2000. It was not intuitive. Even though I've relapsed into hardware for the sheer pleasure of using hardware, my current setup is at least much easier than that ever was.

No one's going to think ill of you for not using a hardware sampler.

you never should've sold the Roland's. except maybe the 202.

i regret selling my 808 because they've gone up like another £500 in value since! crazy!

probably won't even be able to afford another one now. gutted.

This is slightly off topic but I started to take an interest in the BBC Micro after checking out the C64. I can't recall the sound chip being that great but check this out there were a number of interesting upgrades for it including a pretty comprehensive midi interface!! :O http://acorn.chriswhy.co.uk/8bit_Upgrades/EMR_BBCMIDI.html

Cool. I guess that was kinda almost pre Atari St sequencing.

Well yeah, the Atari ST didn't really introduce anything new, it just had MIDI built in so it was less hassle to set up. If you're ever designing products, never underestimate the importance of reducing the user's hassle.
