What is God?

The only idea about God that I find reasonable is that it is an omniscient being and that, perhaps, it is the source of our subjective consciousness. In fact, if this were true, all systems would be conscious to a certain extent just because God observes them, suggesting that there are different levels of consciousness (think about the difference between a worm, a dog, a human). Of course, you don't even have to call this force God, but people like that sort of thing.

Also, if you're going to apply consciousness to systems, this would mean that everything is conscious. Like, God is aware of proteins, so your proteins have some super basic form of consciousness.

It is at this point that most people would stop giving a shit about God because they'd realize that God doesn't make them special. It's actually the complexity of our brains that makes us special :/

I kind of prefer the idea of a pantheon of gods, eg hindi style. I've been told they've a god for practically everything you can think of, with 300 million+ gods and counting.

I want there to be a god for tangled cables.. a malicious little guy that goes into my studio and gleefully transforms my cables into spaghetti when I'm not looking.

God is a paradigm of justice and goodness. Reality is brutal and caotic, and life is an attempt at organizing reality. Believing in God is believing in what life and social order stand for, but life is little more than a small abnormality in the cosmos, and not a unifying force - if there is a God, He doesn't represent much. He makes people feel better at night, when logic and common sense fails to do that. I tend to think of God as an imaginary friend for grown-ups, because reality is way too scary to fully comprehend.

God to me is the event at the beginning of the universe, from which I gather was pure energy. That energy became all of the matter that is in the universe - therefore everything is God.

I'm not going to "/thread" this, but these kind of answers kind of disproved "god" for me, or at least made that question completely uninteresting. People say Aphex and BoC are "god" suggesting that they've been moved emotionally in a way that implies the culturally understood idea of "spirituality" or a higher power, but in fact, those emotional connections are to something and someone VERY human!

I remember hearing Allegri's Miserere in a gothic cathedral in England a few summers ago. I was moved to tears by the beauty of the music, the architecture, the powerful combination of the two. I then thought, wow this must be a spiritual moment for me! Thanks god! I owe you one! But then, I thought of who actually made this music, and who actually made this building! It wasn't god at all wtf?!?!

I guess I'm a culture vulture in that I've never been moved more by a natural landscape than a human-created work, and that to me makes god unimportant. I only have one life to connect with the Bachs, Bjorks and BoCs of the world, to try and understand why these obviously human creations affect me so much, so much that we think it's "supernatural." I guess that's humanism? but whatever.
