Tough one. I love tempur pedics and memory foam. What's cool about those is you fall asleep and sometimes wake up I'm the same position you conked out in. There's much less tossing and turning, I find.

You might be able to get a really good deal on a 3" memory foam mattress topper from overstock.com (My wife's mom got one for around $100 and it turned a shitty old futon into a really great bed. be warned, when you get the delivery, it smells like an oil spill for a few weeks, but goes away. It's the material).

I've stayed in some really nice hotel beds in my day. It's funny though. Sometimes I can't sleep worth shit on a really fancy mattress, even if it's incredibly comfy to lie on, awake. Maybe that's just cuz they are in a hotel. Sometimes a shitty, old, springy hotel mattress makes for the best sleep.

I sometimes have the best nights sleep on shitty mattresses. Obviously, nothing painful.

I sometimes like the air to be cold and the blankets to be thick and heavy. Kind of like in a cabin or something.

Some people are nuts about a really high thread count in sheets. Sometimes it's nice, but I'll take an old set of worn and washed cotton sheets from the seventies any day.

Water beds can be cool. I haven't slept on one in ages, but when I was a kid, my dad had one and I used to love it. It's kinda like having fun while you sleep. They can also give you crazy dreams.

For along time, I slept with earplugs. Sometimes that helps for deep sleep. So does a double shot of NyQuil right before bed.

The bed I sleep in at home is a queen sized cushion top that we bought cheap of a friend who moved. We have a box spring but no frame. It works pretty well. Especially with really old sheets, heavy blankets and an open window.

Wow. I got carried away.

tempurpedic all the way. we got one about 5 years ago and it has been worth it's weight in gold. I've yet to jump on it with a glass of wine but it did take some getting used to. I still can't tell when my wife gets out of bed, but when she does, I like to sleep in the middle because it's like fresh untouched land there.

My ex had a sleep number bed with the tempurpedic/memory foam mattress topper thing. It was the best sleeping experience I've had.

EVER.

You should try it out before you buy it. Some people like hard beds and other like soft beds.

we have an organic memory foam, it's called ecoseries or some shit. it's all environmentally safe i guess. i sleep better at night knowing i'm not polluting with my mattress. the actual physical comfort level of it sucks though. nothing beats my couch. of course it helps if your lady friend doesn't crawl all over you all night.

yea the couch is so much more comfortable to sleep on after you're married. Christ I think those thorns might be a welcome treat some nights.

Fred,

Can you recall when you bought the Eco Series memory foam mattress if it had an odor at all to start? Also, why does the comfort level suck? Does it not feel like a regular memory foam mattress? Do you have anything to compare it to?

I ask because I just had a standard memory foam mattress delivered and though it is extremely comfortable, the chemical odor is causing an allergic reaction so severe I have to send it back. Nausea, headache, watery eyes, swollen nasal passages, asthma symptoms, sore throat, the whole 9. I am casually looking at Eco Series now... the price is significantly higher but if that means no allergy, then it might be the way to go (after much saving and penny pinching.)

Just trying to do some research. Thanks.

Apparently, the more slats you have, the better the support for your body which makes sense.

I am actually a little bit allergic to some memory foam materials...Made me a little wheezy which is something you may want to check (I'm not asthmatic so it was strange for this to happen)

Foam mattresses are better for those who suffer from dust mite allergies as it is less space for them to move around in then a spring bed.

A lot of the really special people I've known in my life spend a lot of their time in or on their bed, just hanging out, having fun.

I'M SORRY FOR BEING ME I CAN'T HELP THE WAY I AM

I currently spend around 70% of my day in bed, I actually get a dread from being in bed all the time. It's so warm.

Hey sorry I just saw this. Yeah there was a funky smell -- as I think is the case with all these foam beds from what I understand. It went away after a couple of weeks. It doesn't sound near as bad as what you're describing though. I don't understand how an odor could cause an allergic reaction... it might be something more than that with the bed?

As for the comfort level, I feel like I'm sleeping in a divot every night. I'm starting to think this might have more to do with the shitty support that I have beneath the mattress-- rickety old bed frame that it is. I had the same problem with my last matress which was a regular ass spring mattress.

I can't say that I would recommend it, then again, I wouldn't want to deter you from what might be the right bed for you. Maybe see if you can try it for a few months? Good luck.
