odors arent technically allergens from what i understand, but they can be irritants, giving people allergy-like symptoms and pissing them right off, especially if they're trying to get some irritated sleep

thanks to this thread I will most likely be investing in a memory foam mattress for my new apartment. 5X265.gif

Guest Franklin

my wife and I just bought a simmons spring mattress that is really HARD but also has a pillow top. it's fucking amazing.

my last bed was soft and it really hurt my back after a while.

the bed I had before that was a cheap memory foam that was great but my cat peed all over it.

i fully recommend that you go into a mattress store and spend some serious time laying on beds... turning over... falling asleep even. the variability btw diff kinds is likely bigger than you think and both my wife and I had immediate preferences after laying on a bunch.

cat pee is an interesting factor. There will be two cats in my new apartment... if they pee on the memory foam, is there hope of ever removing the smell?

The smell wasn't what was causing the allergic reaction, it was the many chemicals off-gassing into the house. In fact, at a certain point I couldn't even smell it anymore, but the reaction persisted.

I suggest that before you buy a memory foam mattress, read up on what memory foam is made of and decide if you want to spend 1/3rd of your life laying on (and absorbing) toxic chemicals. Here's a start: Chemical Components of Standard Memory Foam Mattresses If you don't trust that site since they sell an alternative product, simply Google it and you'll find plenty of info.

I am looking at buying an Essentia Organic "memory foam" mattress now. Just gotta' save up.

Yeah, my girlfriend has a mid-range tempurpedic and it's wonderfully comfortable (except they retain body heat like a bastard [and bastards apparently retain body heat very well]), but the outgassing is worrisome. My sinuses felt irritated for about a month after moving in with her.

We just got new tempurpedic pillows and I am reacquainting myself with the odors and the inescapable dreams of chemical plants.

Also, yes, you need lots of support under the mattress itself or it'll kill your back.

As for the comfort level, I feel like I'm sleeping in a divot every night. I'm starting to think this might have more to do with the shitty support that I have beneath the mattress-- rickety old bed frame that it is. I had the same problem with my last matress which was a regular ass spring mattress.

you ever rotate the mattress 180 degrees? my wife is lighter than me so her side is definitely different. every couple months we turn the mattress 180 and it feels like new. give it a shot.
