Yeah, but Dylan sux.

Bob Dylan's first four album were kind of boring, from Bringing it all Back Home up until Nashville Skyline are his best albums (after that hes been shit)

dylan is/was far greater and wayyyy more influential than all those other groups (with the exception of the beatles and possibly hendrix) doors did some good stuff and some really bad stuff but get a far worse reputation than they deserve cos of that terrible oliver stone movie which made them look like complete and utter pricks , but theyre still second rate by the standards of the other stuff that was out at the time tho which by todays standards is pretty good really

- I have never watched the Oliver Stone film (maily because i hate some of those actors and Oliver Stone's movies are shit)

i love the three first albums... the soft parade sucks. still dont know the last albums exept few tracks.

The Soft Parade sucks so bad, it seems to me that they were forced to make that album by the producer (he wanted to do a Sgt. Pepper kind of album)

Also their last two albums (Morrison Hotel, LA Woman) are them their best (in my opinion of course) ..

I'll give you "influential", but not "greater".

He can lick me ding dong.

you can't compare Dylan to The Doors, or the Beatles, or the Stones, or Hendrix. or anybody. what's the point?

total meaningless waste of time to even go there at all. they're all completely different. especially Dylan and The Doors.

I aint getting dragged into a Dylan argument. I love him but freely accept anyone who wishes to hate him.

I think The Doors were a bit overrated, like I said The End just blew my mind the first time I heard it. It was one of those stuck-to-the-spot, jaw-hits-ground-moments. 'What the fuuuuck is this tune!!!' I had never heard them before, though I'd heard the name of the band. I do like some other tracks but a lot of it never could follow that time I first heard The End. And some tracks they made are utter tosh lol imo.

i don't hate Dylan, myself. i'm just saying you can't compare the 2. and yeah The Doors did do a lot of shit stuff towards the end.

Jim Morrison was always too fucked up. like Ray Manzarek said, 'Jim would drink when he was happy and drink when he was sad'..

imo it's really hard to pin down a more important American band from that era (I can't quite count Hendrix)

Yeah. Velvet Underground, The Doors, Hendrix and (tho not my fave) The Beach Boys were the most important popular American rock acts. Fuckin UK had a slew.

well given the size of America's population compared to the size of the UK, this should really happen all the time, always! lol

yet it does not. hmmmm

Guest Shit Attack

uhhh i didnt compare them these dudes were talking about who the most influential artists of that era was and i said dylan (along with the beatles ) which is true + i personaly think he was a "GREATER" artist than the doors (and most of their contemporaries) same as somebdoy else thought he sucked absolute donkey dick. thats not comparing its just personal taste. but influence wise the stuff he was singing/writing about in the mid 60s influenced all that counterculture shit afterwards including the doors, velvet underground even frank zappa and most of the rest, do i really need to argue that? its a fact sorry

ditto

I think it's important to know Dylan was earlier on the counterculture "scene" and likewise an extension of the folk/singer songwriter scene and bridged the gap between the beatniks and the hippies. I liked his personality (his 60s interviews are gold, truly clever bastard) but never cared for his music. I appreciate his importance though. And he fucking introduced pot to the Beatles, right? He also had to face fan "backlash" early on when he went electric.

The thing about the Doors, and Morrison's lyrics, is there's something really American about them - Western and Native American allusions, Blues sound, the distinctive organ. They didn't ape the British or get heavy into typical psychedelic tropes of the time. Hard to describe, but maybe someone else knows what I mean.

Oh, and the kicker is Zappa was among the most brilliant artist of the time, but he was too busy making fun the entire late 60s to be encapsulated with the other "legends."

Finally got to listen to the alternative tracks, here are my thoughts:

The Changeling - Slower than the original but fun as hell.

Love Her Madly - Drunk version?? really fun, jim sounds drunks.

Been Down So Long - This version kicks the album version's ass (and i love the album version), faster, raw and powerful

Cars Hiss By My Window - Not much different from the album version, just like 30 seconds longer.

LA Woman - Again not much different from the album version just a bit longer (feels like a live version)

The WASP - the mundane version .. kind of slow, has some added lyrics

Riders on the storm - sounds like the live version we never got, fucking great. (Jim sings a song about albuquerque at the beginning)

Overall i'll give this a 8/10 interesting and fun alternatives but they don't beat the origionals (except Been Down So Long)

oh and those new unreleased tracks are amazing.

  • 1 year later...

For fuck's sake how many times do I need to keep repurchasing these albums every ten years for more alternate versions and unreleased tracks?! The life of an obsessive completionist.

edit: oh shit, RIP Ray!

I never bought the 40th anniversary mixes, i knew from the second i heard a preview they were a scam.

The only Doors remasters worth getting are the new Analogue Productions remasters, the sound is gorgeous.

Ah, good to know. Are the 40th Anniversary editions the only place to get the new versions and unreleased tracks though?

For LA Woman you can get the 40th Anniversary Edition (not to be confused with the 40th Anniversary mixes), it has unreleased tracks and alternative version of most of the tracks on LA woman.

For the rest you gonna have to buy the 40th Anniversary Mixes witch contains some unreleased tracks (couple of good ones like You Need Meat and a demo for The Celebration of the Liard King). Most of the bonus tracks on the 40th Anniversary mixes are studio sessions and demos (i find them interesting, specially the Roadhouse Blues sessions)

Unfortunately if you buy the 40th Anniversary Mixes you'll get stuck with probably the worst remastering in the history of music, it butchered the doors legacy.
