i love how Lucas clearly had some sort of notion beyond just the 'evil side of the force' to represent what the Sith actually were and dropped the ball on it so fucking hard

Well at least people will finally realise that Star Wars are kids films.....

exactly, all 6 of them are just kiddie bullshit, it's just that the first 3 got the nostalgia thing attached to them so they're considered superior.

/thread ?

yes, /thread. i must say, while i would have enjoyed all these films much more had i seen them as a kid, i just watched the empire strikes back for the first time and i could barely make it to the end—same with a new hope.

running joke (im probably the only one that finds it funny)

anyway, I think this whole debacle is fairly relevant because the franchise is one of the greatest sellers of all time, solidified a genre of sci-fi fantasy in multiple generations that otherwise may not have had an interest in it, A lot of my friends said the Star Wars series made them read up on film history and sought out other films like Blade Runner, or Kurosawa movies, that they may not have watched otherwise....so honestly, yeah, even though Star Wars ain't my favorite, I can absolutely understand why people get butthurt about Lucas's reckless shilling or constant re-editing of the only decent films hes made.

Has anyone asked him about this? i would love to see him struggle with answering the question.

The original trilogy was corny as hell, and Lucas was barely competent with directing ANH, but the original trilogy is far better written, directed, acted, and structured than the prequels.

Yes, they're all kiddie movies. Yes, nostalgia is a big part of the apparently lasting appeal. Yes, the original trilogy has deep flaws. None of them are high art. But there are degrees of kiddie bullshit. Episodes I-III are just horrible filmmaking. Beyond redemption. I say that not as a Star Wars fanboy (I'm not a Star Wars fanboy). I say that as a person who appreciates movies in general. Episode 1 is about as big a mess as The Room.
