Meanwhile, cut to "Party Rock Anthem," lol!

He didn't mean to imply this, but did nevertheless imply, that using a computer = striving to create a perfect, 'absolutely correct' performance. But you could strive for that without a computer, by recording tons and tons of takes.

I think his basic take home message was 'f u skrillex'.

This old chesnut has been going since I can remember. I recall playing some 'electronic' music to a rock head at school and him saying 'it ain't proper music if its made with a computer' or some nonsence. That said I really liked the Foo Fighters back in the 90s post Nirvana not that I listen to em now tho lol.

I had exactly the same bullshit in college and in my first job, but I don't see what Dave Grohl is saying here is the same at all.

I'm taking his sentiments here as a backlash against the autotuned, ProTools edited perfection that permeates throughout the popular music industry and which has done for many years now.

again, i don't really hate skrillex as much as i hate the people that think that sort of music has any sort of integrity. i try to be open minded, and a lot of the time i employ a "well, each to his/her own" attitude towards personal preferences such as music taste and who knows, maybe it is original in its own way, sorta like a drawing by an autistic kid.

That's also what came across to me. His talk about them having recorded in his garage is basically him stressing the importance of having fun, playing well and being around good musicians/producers - hence accepting the human element thing instead of overproducing. I don't think he was having a dig at electronic music, he had just performed with Skrillex and Deadmau5.

Absolutely in agreement.

ProTools has been used by rock bands for years. Fuck, Trent Reznor was using it back in the Broken era and that was like...1992.

Yeah I actually watched the documentary about them and their new album (which was only like 1/3 if that much of the doc) a couple nights ago on Hulu. The whole analog thing was really a outlet for them as a band mentally. They were getting sick of recording in bits and pieces and stressing over edits and shit. They just found it more worthwhile and less expensive to record together at Grohl's house. Ironically Butch Vig himself was the one who make Kurt go to Albini for In Utero because Vig would request so many overdubs on Nevermind. Dave also mentions how much he tries not to overthink lyrics and music, instead prefers to hash things out. So I kind of see what he was trying to say, and the last bit about the heart and head was more important than the pure anti-pro tools and anti-computer stuff.

Doing your guitar/bass/drum whatever take 1000 times to get it perfect and making sure everything is timed perfectly to a click track isn't exactly that interesting either. You lose the human feel of the music, which for band type music, is important to me.

Regardless of how you make your music I think that's a big deal.

the latest album came with a piece of the master tape.... that works with film stock but not so much with a piece of opaque magnetic tape...

yeah, i think that's not only completely superfluous but also a really stupid thing to do. Really? destroying the master tape?

because that's smart...

Wasn't as awful as I thought it would be. He comes across as quite an hounrable geezer. And if I was honest there's part of me actually agrees with him, though I got plenty of time 'for what goes on in a computer' too.

Can't stand the Foo's though. Mainstream Dad Rock. And that's the second worst type of rock (after glam rock)

I was in a car recently, so I heard the radio, and a familiar sounding song came on (familiar as in it sounded like a lot of modern rock music of the last 5 years). I thought it sounded like something the drummer in my first band would produce/like (he records the majority of local rock bands that get on the radio). As the verse kicked in I thought 'this guy has a really good voice, it's a shame he's playing such generic music, and it's a shame that anyone who hears it will hear that before they hear that the dude singing actually has an unusually good vocal tone.' Then towards the end of the verse there was a twist in the chord progression that was unexpected and I thought 'well that's unusually clever for a modern rock song on the radio.' And then the chorus kicked in and it became clear I was listening to the Foo Fighters. Now admittedly I stopped caring about them after One by One because it started getting too 'typically foo fighters' to still be interesting at all for me and the songs were just less memorable in general. But regardless of what anyone says I still think Dave Grohl is a musician of the highest caliber when it comes to knowing his instruments/craft, and he really does have a gift for writing catchy power pop that far exceeds the majority of his peers doing a similar thing. He's not just a hack, he has actual talent. Anyway, i came to the realization that present day Foo Fighters are probably as generic as music can possibly get and still have me respect it. Like it would be horrible radio rock to my ears, but it's crafted and executed well enough that I can still enjoy it. There aren't really any other bands in the same realm that I can say that for. Modern rock has pretty much become one of the only genres I can almost never tolerate. But somehow they make it work. Also that speech was kind of touching, and it was nice to hear. I like Dave. He seems like a really genuine decent fellow. Fuck the haters.

Dave knows what he's doing when it comes to writing songs.

There's a cool video interview where he basically says:

"White people like cheesy, catchy choruses they can sing along to." (paraphrasing but you get the idea)

So he capitalizes on that.

He seems like an awesome dude to hang with.

Who would you rather rather have a beer with Dave Grohl or Richard James? I'd plump for Dave personally.

but i can't help thinking he's the baby swimming after the dollar

i'm just glad there are still people that shut their mouth and just make music

Friends of mine saw Foo Fighters live a few months ago, he gave the exact same speech - "I'd like to thank all these bands for coming out and, you know, for playing real instruments, making real music. Just remember that if you see a band with laptops and shit, it isn't real music," etc etc etc paraphrasement obviously.

I would have the opinion that I picked up the guitar and drums pretty easy when I was a kid. I've had a computer for 20+ yrs of my life and still don't understand fully this instrument. Maybe Dave Grohl has a similar problem.

Let those amongst you who wrote that breakout riff in Weenie Beenie or played drums on Songs For The Deaf cast the first stone.

Grohl is and always will be a rock god, even if he makes sub par Foos records now. He still managed to tear it up on the Them Crooked Vultures album though!
