I haven't really paid much attention to this thread but my philosophy is that recorded music should be as fucking perfect as you can get it, in terms of production. I'm not just talking clean sound, but if it takes autotune/drum replacement/thousands of guitar takes/edits to get the point across, then so be it. If I want to hear a raw sound, I'll go see the band live or listen to a live album. Recording an album is the one chance to make something sound as polished as possible.

you just described everything I hate about rock music.

production should be an artform as varied and diverse as any other, not just a talented underpaid nobody cleaning up shitty performances from a collection squabbling man children with inflated egos.

It depends on the sound you're going for. I've heard plenty of band-based music that is polished as fuck, that i've enjoyed partly because of the amazing production (e.g. coldplay—yes i know nobody else here likes them).

But even stuff that doesn't rely on correction still needs a bit of studio processing to sound good. Without decent mixing, engineering etc it'd sound like shit no matter who the band is.

But i guess i'm kinda heading outside the scope of this conversation..

I hear ya, and for the record I like Coldplay as well. They're not in my top tier of favorite artists by any means but I don't apologize for liking them either. I thought the album sounded great (didn't love it though), but then again I'm a big fan of Brian Eno's production work.

Yeah Eno definitely added a lot to their sound. They were kinda heading in that direction already though, some of their earlier stuff is dreamy as fuck!

i like Albini's live big room real reverb sound. that to me is really his sound. you can hear the rooms. Digital effects are a minimum. I love his recordings. Its all technical. He is really an engineer not a producer.

i wish all the auteurs records were recorded like, "after murder park". it's got a devastating sound to it.

It depends

No it doesn't.

Part of me is all for raw, rough and ready production (or engineering, as was pointed out elsewhere is more like the actual role of Albini). But then one of my favourite albums is Mr. Bungle. I'm no muso, producer or whatever, but that album is a chaotic nightmare that at the same time sounds tight as fuck.

Mr. Grohl clarifies his statement:

He goes on to say:

I love music. I love ALL kinds of music. From Kyuss to Kraftwerk, Pinetop Perkins to Prodigy, Dead Kennedys to Deadmau5.....I love music. Electronic or acoustic, it doesn't matter to me. The simple act of creating music is a beautiful gift that ALL human beings are blessed with. And the diversity of one musician's personality to the next is what makes music so exciting and.....human.

That's exactly what I was referring to. The "human element." That thing that happens when a song speeds up slightly, or a vocal goes a little sharp. That thing that makes people sound like PEOPLE. Somewhere along the line those things became "bad" things, and with the great advances in digital recording technology over the years they became easily "fixed." The end result? I my humble opinion.....a lot of music that sounds perfect, but lacks personality. The one thing that makes music so exciting in the first place.[/indent]

And, unfortunately, some of these great advances have taken the focus off of the actual craft of performance. Look, I am not Yngwie Malmsteen. I am not John Bonham. Hell...I'm not even Josh Groban, for that matter. But I try really (expletive) hard so that I don't have to rely on anything but my hands and my heart to play a song. I do the best that I possibly can within my limitations, and accept that it sounds like me. Because that's what I think is most important. It should be real, right? Everybody wants something real.

I don't know how to do what Skrillex does (though I ... love it) but I do know that the reason he is so loved is because he sounds like Skrillex, and that's badass. We have a different process and a different set of tools, but the "craft" is equally as important, I'm sure. I mean.....if it were that easy, anyone could do it, right? (See what I did there?)

So, don't give me two Crown Royals and then ask me to make a speech at your wedding, because I might just bust into the advantages of recording to 2 inch tape.

Now, I think I have to go scream at some kids to get off my lawn.

Stay frosty.
