Computer problem concerning an unknown device causing slow startup

Recommended Posts

Guest ruiagnelo

So about 4 days ago my Win7 64bits system made a couple of updates (framework 4 components) and since then it has been very slow on startup, specifically getting stuck on the login screen, all black, for about 1:00/1:30 minutes. After the login fields appear, i write the name and pass, windows starts and everything goes as usual.

I have noticed then, while browsing the device manager, that there is an unknown device listed and not working properly. Screenshot:

On the device's properties, specifically on details, there is the following reference: ACPI\TOS6205 *TOS6205. Screenshot:

I went to visit my friend who runs a computer store and frequently helps me solve computer problems, but this time he couldn't find a clear answer to what is causing this or how it can be solved.

As far as i have understood, he explained me that what might cause the slow startup is Win7 trying to install an ACPI device, even tho it is incompatible with the system, that runs an AHCI structure.

The drivers for this device can't be updated, and it can't be uninstalled or removed.

Do you guys have any clue about this? Sorry for the screenshots in portuguese. I have translated the key words. Ask for any more information you need and i will post it...

this looks like the driver you need

I have tried that. I have tried every solutions people with the same issue were presented with in the forums, but it just doesn't work.

this faulty device is related to bluetooth in any case it seems, maybe you should try removing anything related to bluetooth and see if it helps, uninstalling its drivers and such.

I wouldn't have mocked macs in this paranoid hacking/intrusion related thread Babar once posted.

edit: and would acknowledge the existence of god and resign on the fact that I deserved it

I wasn't too confident on bluetooth being the problem, but i installed the toshiba drivers just in case. No more unknown device. It is working properly now. But startup is still slow, which makes me think the device wasn't the problem at all. Also i don't know if it was just a coincidence that i got the issue after the update, or if it messed with the system. At this moment i really don't have any single clue

you can try uninstalling those recent updates from programs and features in control panel.

That's what i thought immediatly and uninstalled them, but nothing happened. I don't think this has anything to do with devices anyway.

Will try to defrag, even tho i am sure won't do anything for me

actually i think it does have something to do with drivers or devices, don't think you should bother with defrag, if you left it on default it defrags automatically once in a week, it's not something that will cause such a nasty and sudden slowdown

check the event viewer, see if there are any errors.

do you have something plugged like external hdd or some other usb device ? crappy cd/dvd in the drive can also cause long delays on startup.

did you try unplugging that hdd and starting up windows ?

not showing event viewer can be many things, a lot of viruses and trojans like to mess up with such things, are you sure you are clean ? does it give you any error messages when you try to open it ?

BootVis ( http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/System-Tweak/BootVis.shtm ) may give you an idea about what's increasing boot time.

EDIT: Ooooh, didn't realise it was an XP only utility. Damnit - hold on.....

Ok try this -

msconfig > Boot Tab > Tick Boot Log > Apply > OK

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

sometimes i have problems with my pc and the first thing i do is sit and google for it. only if this fails, i get to visit my friends who are expert on this matter.

but this time i just kept getting nowhere. now it's done!

Rui, what kind of Toshiba laptop do you have?

I can't even begin to count the issues I had with my old Toshiba.

Toshiba Satellite L500-12G.

You probably aren't familiar with the model because it is exclusive to my country.

You can see more info here anyway.

Actually i have had it for 2 years now and never had any issues before!

Ah, ok, the 2 years of good operation probably rules out most of the issues I had with mine.

Mine was a circa 2005 Satellite with pretty severe thermal issues that became apparent after about 4 months of use (basically Tosh, in all their wisdom, routed the ventilation paths in such a way that ventilation didn't actually occur, but a whole lot of lint and dust was directed onto the processor core with no where else to escape. Shortly thereafter the computer started having unexpected thermal shutdowns, which led to all kinds of data corruption and a few premature grey hairs on my head). There was a class action lawsuit because of that issue. Glad to hear the Satellites aren't so bad now!

Another thing I can say is there was a shit-ton of bloatware on my old Toshiba, and if you can get rid of some of it the startups run smoother. (but Toshiba might have improved in that respect, too)

I have been treating my machine nicely and always take it to my friend's store for a physical cleaning once a year. Still, i have to say that this particular toshiba could use a better ventilation system!
