Ego Posted March 1, 2012 Report Share Edit Hide Delete Posted March 1, 2012 It's exciting stuff. Low powered, cheap, enough resources for HD playback. Lets hope the supply will live up to the demand. First small batch got sold out in seconds yesterday. Ego Posted March 1, 2012 Report Share Edit Hide Delete Posted March 1, 2012 (edited) What are you talking about? Find me a smartphone with those inputs and outputs (2xUSB, Ethernet, HDMI, GPIO) under $350... This isn't a smartphone, it's a computer for $35 which can provide various services your stupid dumbphone can not because of its retarded software jail, closed hardware design or lack of connectivity. It can be a router/firewall, a fileserver, a webserver, a VOIP server, a media player/server, it can be used to control your domotics and so on. OK, 5 times more? Can we say that, at least? Also these seem a lot more hackable and developer-friendly than smartphones. It's kind of apples and oranges. I want one of these to run a small, low-powered home webserver off, for example. While I could run a webserver off my phone there are logistical problems with that. Yeah, at this price, you could just have a dedicated server/client for whatever you want. This seems kind of ridiculous until you consider that you could strategically place them, e.g. plugged into the TV, in the kitchen, etc. Combine this with stuff like USB-enabled Arduinos (for nearly the same price, I might add!) and you can have a computer that that fits almost anywhere and uses whatever interface you want, as long as its processing requirements aren't too demanding. Great. As long as you're doing it for fun and not trying to run some high-traffic blog or something, you should be fine. http://68kmla.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4012 Apple ][ web server... ironically appears to be down right now lol. I like the way it's more limited by the user's imagination than the machine's own performances. You could do so much with such a little thing in the hands…It's really exciting. Even in "pure" informatics purposes it's really interesting, running a small programming/testing station for example. I guess you could play some old games on it, even have a DAW working and bring it everywhere. Gosh, I want one of those.
