They're all sourced from tape so quality aint great (though I think it sort of fits in with the aesthetic of their old stuff) but I believe the original rip of Random 35 track tape (Then labelled as Old Tunes Vol.1) was 320kbps and the other two are 192kbps

lol, there's some misinformation in your posts (such as the random tape being old tunes vol 1, and my recollection is all the orig rips were at 160 or 192). Best way is just to check Fredd-e's BoC pages (which seems to be your source as well):

Also I have no idea how some of the tracks on the 35 track collection got their names...."Blueberry"? "It's too Orangey?"...where the hell did these names come from? Seems highly dubious to me.

None of the tracks on the as of yet unidentified tape have names, save for those that have appeared on the previous Old Tunes tapes.

Hard for me to like the old tunes. They just feel like a huge demo tape. You can tell some future songs took ideas from old tunes stuff and built off them.

Until 2009 the album now known as Random 35 Tracks Tape was known as Old Tunes Vol.1 as only Old Tunes Vol.2 & A Few Old Tunes had been officially named via the attached slip cases, so this was assumed what it should be named (and is probably still named on various p2p/torrent sites). It wasn't until the discovery of another copy of the tape that A Few Old Tunes turned out to be another name for Old Tunes Vol.1 and so the previous Old Tunes Vol.1 then got renamed to Random 35 blah blah....

that's what's good about them! imo.

i think having 3 old tunes comps with only two being numbered makes no sense. always thought that. never got why anyone would assume otherwise. glad it's cleared now. i can sleep like a normal person for 3 years now!

I was told there were "other compilations", but not given any details. This was when I inquired directly about the tracknames on the 35 tracks tape, as I have a cassette, but no j-card for it, so there were no tracknames. Suffice to say, they declined to provide any ID for them, simply stating there were other compilations like this and some of these tracks might not even be by BoC (riiiiight...).

There were rumours of a 'birthday tape', but nothing substantiated.

fight to the death! I prefer the old tunes tapes to much of their official discography, more broad in terms of style, more playful too. I daresay if you don't find anything to like about 5-9-78 you "aren't a troo fan". lol.

I wouldn't disagree that they're more playful, they do sound like a lot of ideas jammed into a short time period. But they just seem SO dated to me, and I don't really dig it

Well, most of their music is intentionally produced to sound dated and nostalgic.

So it would be complaining that they were successful in what they set out to produce.
