Posting for advice, I've only heard the AFX/Tuss/Caustic stuff on Rephlex, plus the Monolith EP. What other ESSENTIAL Rephlex records must I check out? Thanks

I don't know how "obscure" these recommendations are but they are some of my favourites not yet mentioned.

"Normal (Changed Version)" on this Baby Ford EP is one of my absolute Rephlex favourites: http://www.discogs.com/Baby-Ford-Normal-Re/release/63828 (Here's the shorter radio edit that is on the other EP in the pair:

)

This Bochum Welt (along with all the other Bochum Welt stuff) is also very very good: http://www.discogs.com/Bochum-Welt-Feelings-On-A-Screen/master/12157

As for something more obscure, Lektrogirl's I Love My Computer might not be great overall but it has a few great tracks, especially this one:

Edit: What's with the weird highlighting... Also: 8th year as a new member!

this again ^

but just picked up x-asp - terra firma for a bargain of $2 (http://www.discogs.com/X-Asp-Terra-Ferma/master/11969)

WOW! Fucking great! Only one documented release on discogs!? Sad. Very Aphexy- and with a great mike p remix to boot. Hard to go wrong.

Rephlex... you did it again!

anything by pierre bastien

I think, aesthetically speaking at least, Pierre Bastien is probably the most fascinating artist on Rephlex by many many miles.

I booked him for a small festival I help organize a few years ago. It was one of the best shows I had ever seen in my life. It was mesmerizing from start to finish. Had a beer with him afterwards and told me he got a fax out of the blue, before he released on Rephlex, from RDJ of a hand written note saying something like 'You're my most favorite artist ever' or something to that effect. He said he wanted to frame it, but the fax ink was fading.

well that would make sense, bastien permeates most of the non-mental tracks on drukqs

there was a moment when someone suggested Steinvord might be someone way more obscure than any of the previous suggestions:

Macc And dgoHn

I think this is the last drum & bass style record Rephlex put out, it's pretty good. Very atmospheric/dark experimental drum and bass stuff

one of my favorite Hecker albums (not tim, Florian) is on rephlex, it was my introduction to him

Hecker - Recordings for Rephlex
http://www.discogs.com/Hecker-Recordings-For-Rephlex/release/847031

if you like Pierre Bastien, the only other 'similar' thing on Rephlex that I know of is this experimental album by Victor Gama
http://www.rephlex.com/releases/view/106/Victor%20Gama/Pangeia%20Instrumentos/CAT%20135

much more gamelan than jazz but similar concepts at work ( i think)

those three releases are all amazing yes!

R-E-P-H-L-E-X.

Are there really any other labels that have the gall to release *quality* experimental stuff like Bastien, Gama, Anibaldi, and Bastien side by side with just cheeseball stuff like The Gentle People or even just silly italian shit like Lory D? My favorite label for sure, such a range of fun stuff to explore!

Man, I can remember picking this up and almost buying it in Sister Ray back when it was Selectadisc. That was when they had a Rephlex section. Which was in their large electronica section.

I don't think the former exists anymore and the latter is pitiful excuse of it's former self.

Gonna have to grab a copy now.

Both great albums.

I also have the Hecker 10" that came out on rephlex that I seem to remember was just previews of tracks from the album. Looking on discogs now it says it's actually a split with Voafose. Gonna have to check that when I get home....

Guest Retrig

Yeah. My pic. Grant was joking about the carpet at top left when he referred to the 3 copies in existence. The 7" in the front are the first 2 Ed DMX Collapse of the Wave Function singles. There's a few things missing here that I have somewhere.

North is Bochum Welt Desktop Robotics. East is Bochum Welt Feelings on a Screen (the wicked Rephlex shaped CD). North East is Yee-King Superuser.

so many good releases its hard to choose any best ones. the gentle people are a favorite though, it truly is the music of paradise...reminds me of the spirit of henry mancini's lujon at times, just ultra lush. pp roy has stuff like this too especially on the 7up release. excellent lounge music. jp buckle mailed a CD i still have of demo tracks, i should get it out and post it up. cant go without mentioning leila as well, like weather and especially the soda stream ep on XL records. super emotive and i believe afx coproduced some tracks with her on the rephlex releases.

totally worth it to just horde the entire catalogue.

One of my more recent faves in obscure / underrated Rephlex albums is this one: https://www.discogs.com/Robert-Normandeau-Sonars/release/49916

Would've loved to have more of these on Rephlex, and from what I remember from AFX's comments on soundcloud, he did too.

Yeah, not inherently 'obscure' what with it being Brian Dougans, but not oft-mentioned enough, especially given how influential it was on the label's beginnings.

Was disappointed we never got a DVD.

A reissue is one of about a million things due for release on FSOLDigital one day.

The track "Spleen" overwhelmed me the first time I heard it. I felt like I was child being eaten by a tiger.

If you want more like Normandeau, Chantal Dumas (http://www.electrocd.com/en/bio/dumas_ch/discog/) and Monique Jean (http://www.electrocd.com/en/bio/jean_mo/discog/) scratch that itch. They make some of the best modern electroacoustic music I've ever heard.

This Jean piece is extraordinary: http://www.electrocd.com/en/radio/?poste=cat_imed_0366&audio=1796#audio:1796
