I've asked it before in some NIN thread, but never really gotten a satisfying answer, so here goes again. I've noticed that there is something really distinct in the sound of Reznor productions, but especially everything NIN. I don't know what it is, since my knowledge of musicology is limited. Is it the tuning, chord progressions, instruments used, what is it? Anyone know what I am talking about. Or am I talking out of my ass.

I know what you mean and I can definitely hear it. This kind of thing is noticeable especially in classical music also, where notes and progressions will sound uncannily like their composers other works. Personally I can hear his melody work having the same kind of mood or at least 'note relations' and I think it just comes down to taste. He also has a very nice production style and I think that's once again just a product of his brain making decisions, and so I think it ends up being a lot of small steps in the way things are handled that ends up the final Reznor product. Not really a technical answer sorry but yeah.

SupaLOL™ - he's totally lip syncing, and those 90's people dancing to Down In It brought me to tears...

Perhaps in retrospect current Trent isn't so bad

I think it might partially be his use of synths. They seem a bit cheesy and digital (often in a good way), and they tend to have a lot of highs and mid ranges, not much bass. In fact, his songs all seem a bit lacking on the bass end overall.
