the build quality of those things suck... at least, they are not exactly rugged.. I had one, and during a show the USB connector had snapped off the PCB.. thought I could fix it but there was literally a hole where the USB connector used to be affixed..

i have a pocket control, which is the one with standard, i.e. non-endless, dials. i love it. using it almost every day for the last 4-5 years, and it's never failed, plus build quality is amazing, the knobs are still working like on the first day! i even thought about getting a second one, but none ever show up on ebay etc., so i guess people simply don't wanna give them away! however, for more complex setups 16 dials may not be enough.

at least they aren't for me. so i'm on that quest as well...

Looks like Doepfer doesn't sell the actual boxes anymore, but they sell the "brain" from those still as an assembled PCB. You have to add the pots and or faders etc. Still a bit pricey though at $75. Not horrible. I'm tempted to build a slider box this summer :D It would be a more fun project though to build it from scratch on some microcontroller.

although i love the hell out of mine (as i've already mentioned), i don't think it's worth it for $75 (bought mine new for €70) simply because what's great about them isn't the (lack of) features, but the amazing build quality! i bet with really good potis & especially a decent metal case you'd be in a price range where there are more versatile options available.

i'm kind of interested in the livid boxes, especially the Code:

code_v2_front.jpg

would be using it with max mainly. any experiences, please??

I'm pretty sure you can make custom templates on the mackie C4 pro, so that the display shows the name of the knob, as well as the value etc. And you get the led around the knob as well.

Looks like it's discontinued though. You'd have to ebay it.

drill or get somebody to drill you a case and fit your knobs/sliders/whatever in it. custom builds are essential if you want to "get inspired". i'd go for a OSC interface instead of MIDI interface.

Second.

I'd say it's biggest downside is that the knobs dont move smoothly... you can feel clicks every time it increments to a new value. Good for when you are trying to accurately increment a value, but a little weird in all other situations.

if you use Ableton the APC40 for sure. it's not just about comparing the hardware either, the integration and the way the APC automaps everything is a no-brainer.

Surely this has gotta be the best controller because it has Automap and you can actually see what parameters you're tweaking with the additional led screen.

overrated. I have a Remote 49 SLMKII and I only use it for the keys. if I didn't have an APC40 I might use it more but ironically Novation's Automap is more work than Ableton's "Control Surfaces" functionality.

agreed!

plus the build quality is just a joke. i mean maybe it's just me coming from a "deutsche wertarbeit" angle (doepfer...) and all that, but this has to be the cheapest plastic crap i have ever (& SHAME ON ME!!!) bought. if you like touching things instead of just looking at shiny surfaces, this is not for you. sorry for the rant.

i was thinking i also want to play around in acid so maybe i shouldn't purchase an apc

will knob boxes work in sony acid ? is it as easy as highlighting a virtual knob and twisting a physical knob to get it working?

This summer I think I will try to build a midi box using 2 mouse track pads for x-y controllers, a bunch of sliders, and a button grid.

Apparently the mousepads output serial data like a ps2 mouse so it's pretty easy to get it into some type of micro controller.

I'd still love a launchpad though for Numerology. :)
