I heard that right away and just figured it was the same stock loop from the same drum machine; but NO actually sampled Donna Summer then?!

Yeah there are actually a lot of various disco references in Blue Monday!

yeah weird huh? sampling back then was still in a sort of grey area where a lot of people tried to make it sound seamless, where you almost had no idea it was a sample. The sugar hill gang pulled it off in rapper's delight where instead of actually sampling Chic's good times they hired band to replay the same parts exactly like in the original song.
