smokebelch
Not seen this mentioned yet- new Jon Brooks (Advisory Circle) album for Clay Pipe Music- www.claypipemusic.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/shapwick.html Unfortunatly sold out in a couple of hours as only limited to 110 copies. Luckily managed to grab one, really lovely hand made sleeve- and great album too. Second edition will hopefully be out at some point for those that missed the first edition. Any Ghost Box fans on here manage to get a copy too? What does the music sound like? First Id heard of the label was this Jon Brooks release- first couple of albums on the label long sold out now, although both the 'Twynham House' and the 'Thallasing' albums are available digitally. The Jon Brooks sounds very similar to his Advisory Circle stuff, although a bit darker and rough around the edges. All recorded to 4-Track, and has a really nice lo-fi feel to it. I have to say I really like the album, and the packaging is so good. Luckily I had this Monday off when the album was released- both Jon and the label seemed really suprised it sold out so quickly, but I was suprised it lasted the couple of hours it did before selling out. chime
I managed to get one of the last two copies. When I woke up it was already showing as unavailable, but I saw that they posted on facebook that there were a few still in peoples' carts that hadn't paid. While commuting to work, I kept refreshing the page until I snagged one. Being in the US, it'll be another week at least before mine shows up, but I'm excited to hear another Jon Brooks release-- he's really a brilliant musician. His self-released Music for Thomas Carnacki album us one of my favorite electronic albums of the last couple of years. The darker vibe of that one is sort of what I'm anticipating from Shapwick. Caretstik
I managed to get an order in Monday morning and it turned up today - number 6 out of 110. Not had time to devote to a proper listen, so I'm going to enjoy it at a leisurely pace tomorrow. Like our good OP this was the first I'd heard of Clay Pipe, otherwise I would've tried another few releases (I think a few physical reissues may still be available). Design and packaging of Shapwick is beautiful, really glad to have snagged a copy. EDIT: Just saw this on Discogs: http://www.discogs.com/Tyneham-House-Tyneham-House/release/3384424. I know nothing about the music or the artist but I don't care, I want it. Sorry to derail thread. eh Speedy
Yeah this was sold out super fast like days ago. Yeah I wanted a copy when I saw that too! :D There is a download from here- http://tynehamhouse.bandcamp.com/album/tyneham-house Supposedly its a 'secret' collective of musicians- though definatly features Michael Tanner (Plinth) Worth a fiver for the download- would much rather have the cd/tape though. Musically I personally found it a bit twee in places, but interesting release none the less. On 5/26/2012 at 9:58 PM, SPD² said: Yeah this was sold out super fast like days ago. Such is the power of bespoke packaging coupled with a few ill-advised beers that I just ordered the second edition of the Hardy Tree CD. Think I'm going to grow to like this label. Yeah just ordered a copy- would imagine that with the JB release there's many new fans like us checking out the label now. Lucky there seem to be a few still left, im sure they wont last long though! Just given Shapwick another listen, some really lovely moments on the album. Love 'Small scales, shrunken places', and the reggae/dub undercurrent on the album closer Neap Tide is a nice touch. Caretstik
I imagine Jon Brooks is something of a coup for Clay Pipe, and good on him for (hopefully) raising their profile a little. Definitely a label I'll watch from now on. smokebelch
Most definatly, the music suits the packaging so well. You can tell the label is such a labor of love for Frances Castle, guess that'll also be the reason a second edition may take time as they are all hand made by just one person. Also found some nice shots of the first 3 releases on Hard Format- http://www.hardformat.org/index.php?s=Clay+pipe ...Trouble is just makes me wish Id found out about the earlier releases sooner! Caretstik
Yeah, same here. And you've got to give her due credit, to get just 110 releases posted out in a week seems like a real feat. I'm impressed they've all been (presumably) dispatched by now. smokebelch
Yeah she tweated on Friday that they had all been shipped out now- amazing job getting them all done and out so quick, they genuinely seemed suprised they sold out as quick as they did- thats a lot to post all at once! Took a few shots of the Artwork today and made a quick slideshow to Small Scales, Shrunken Spaces from the album. One of the lighter tracks from the album, also one of my favourites. Hope a second edition comes soon for all those that missed out on the first. Caretstik
I'd be surprised if there isn't a second issue, 110 seems like nothing for an artist with a relatively high profile such as Jon Brooks. Listened today by the way, lovely album. chime
My copy of this arrived today and I've already listened to it 3 times. It's excellent. Some of the pieces bring to mind the more meditative tracks from Drukqs, which is definitely not a comparison I would have imagined before hearing it. Caretstik
Looking back through his blog, JB also mentions another release at the end of June on Cafe Kaput. Don't know where he finds enough hours in the day. Also got the Hardy Tree album the other day, not the sort of thing I'd usually go for but lush packaging aside it's still a nice album, especially if you like music that takes nostalgia as its focus as well as just as its inspiration. chime
I can't stop spinning this disc, and I have to say that it makes a nice companion to the Carnacki release. There's even a slight reprise of one of the melodies from Carnacki that pops up in the final track of the album. I love the lo-fi vibe to it, and the acoustic guitars, etc are really beautiful. That chirping bird on (I think) track 13 has astounding clarity for something recorded on a cassette 4 track.
