Guest
I really really wonder, this guy has knocked out an album which is overall fantastic. I must say I was bit sceptic as I found his EP not entertaining properly over the full lenght, but this will be bought. Maybe one little weak track, the rest is really great. Hope he holds up this standard for the next releases. tokn
Mh, this is better than I thought. When all this witch house stuff came up, I was very intrigued by it, but by now I feel like most artists just repeat the same formula over and over again. Still, this is entertaining music. mcbpete
Sounds like Burial without the unnecessary fake vinyl crackle. Danny O Flannagin
Listened to one track. I think the R&B samples are a bit more sophisticated than burial. Burials always sounded a bit shallow to me. I also like the quick cuts on the samples. Guest ruiagnelo
Among the millions of artists that are inspired by Burial, there are plenty of those who indirectly copy his style, because he is, i wouldn't say a revolutionary figure, but a truly solid musician, and people always tend to replicate these kind of artists without even noticing, and there are a few that actually do that in a more admittedly way, and deviate a bit from the formula. I have listened to this album a couple of times, and it just sounds boring to me. I would say it's a more accessible version of Burial, which i don't consider bad at all. But it is just as far as qualities go, for me. On 9/2/2012 at 3:50 AM, Danny O Flannagin said: Listened to one track. I think the R&B samples are a bit more sophisticated than burial. Everything about Burial's music is ghostly and shallow, not in technique, but in symbolism, so i think the way he works the vocals work perfectly. Holy Other just sounds emptier than Burial, even with the vocals having a stronger presence. kirm
I think the comparisons to Burial although understandable are a little unfair, in terms of structure of the tracks and the feel & vibe I think its very different to Burial, its just the vocal sample manipulation which is similar. KGW
This is pretty nice. Nothing major though. I feel like the Desolate album(s) do this sort of thing a bit better. Although they are much more "inspired by" Burial than this is. But I wish he had expanded on the formula he used for the EP. I was longing for some hits akin to 'Touch' from the the ep. IMO, the strongest tracks were the 2 that were released as teasers before the album dropped (love some1, held), and while they were both excellent I'd hoped that they were hinting at something even better on the full length. Regardless of feeling a bit letdown, I think it's a good, consistent album and I will watch to see what he comes out with next. kirm
Yeah I really like this album but he still hasnt got anywhere near topping the awesomenesss that is Touch! Think it works well as an album though and agree it's very consistent and has some gorgous stuff on in it so not complaining Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/74129-holy-other-held/page/2/#findComment-1873580 Share on other sites
ghOsty
Just got it in the mail today... I've only really listened to it one and a half times through so far, but I really enjoy it, it's not too different from his EP but the EP was pretty damn good IMO so that's not all bad. The dark, moody nocturnal vibe is right up my alley. I do think it works better when listened to as a whole as the whole album really isn't that long and many of the songs seem to flow into each other. "Touch" is still probably my fav track of his but I feel this will continue to grow on me. Look forward to future stuff from HO as well. KGW
Agreed. This is growing on me more and more. When I posted my initial comment, I hadn't listened to it loud. I didn't think it would but it really benefits from being turned up. The bass on some tracks is incredible. ghOsty
Take a drive through a city/urban area at night with this turned up loud... did that tonight and damn, it just fit so well, especially cause it's a cloudy windy night, I dunno just seemed the perfect mood setting for listening. KGW
I agree, I was walking through Manchester city centre as it was turning dark and it was windy/rainy and the music sounded great. 'Tense Past' is absolutely huge. Tauhid
Don't why I'm just checking this out since I've been digging his EP for a while now. Really good. Beyond the pitch shifted vocals, his music sounds nothing like Burial's, though, and it's not like their use of vocals is identical.
