Anybody heard of The Clifford GIlberto Combination?

I just stumbled upon this old album released on Ninja Tune in 1998 by The Clifford Gilberto Rhythm Combination called I Was Young and Needed the Money.

This album is EXCELLENT. I've heard it like 10 times through already. It is very very similar to old Squarepusher. This guy was clearly very influenced by him. The sound and style are seriously Feed Me Weird Things (same drum machine, same bass sounds, etc.), and some songs sound similar to Come on My selector and older Spymania Squarepusher. I have to emphasize though that this is definitely NOT just some half-hearted knock-off. The musical style is his own, and some of them much better than anything Tom has done (in my opinion). It's a really really excellent album....seriously one of the best I've heard (if you're into that type of music) It's musically brilliant (very jazzy and well done) and the production is top notch.

The song "Deliver the Weird" is track 2, and is the first example of a song that could have come from Feed Me Weird Things.....

I apologize if this is Jazz Band, but I find it amazing that I've been into this music for 15 years and have never heard of this release or heard this album mentioned. I'm sure there are others that will benefit from this information!

I like this release a ton, but the similarities are almost too much at times. He released this in 98, while Squarepusher's HND was released in 97... The 2 come pretty much from the same vein. Deliver the Weird is like a cross fusion of tracks like Squarepusher Theme, Beep Street, and E8 Boogie.

He's clearly very inspired by Squarepusher, but I find the tracks that dare to be different is where the gold's at. I love Brazilia Freestyle and A Different Forest... Good stuff in there. I originally heard him and Squarepusher both on a DJ Kentaro album called Wheels of Solid Steel, also a great technical turntable album for those interested.

It's nice that people are still discovering this little gem. Shame the guy doesn't make music commercially anymore :/

Discogs says it's some bloke named Florian Schmitt (no other credits to his name), but I remember hearing rumor (probably here) that this album might've been a one-off collab between squarepusher and amon tobin...

Interesting...if it is a Squarepusher collab, that would make sense. But I find it a lot easier to listen to and musically jazzier, in a very very good way.

it sounds like half of the album was by Squarepusher and the other by Amon Tobin. who knows. it is one of my old favorites.

its this guy,

runs a design company today, look at him closely thats how a winner looks like Edited by schlucharski

his sweater seems to be broken. he should make more music.

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

I agree with the idea that Clifford is Squarepusher and Gilberto is Amon Tobin, and that this album is made of collaborations they did. Otherwise this guy is a mysterious Mozart, because mastering different styles might not be an easy thing. I tried to guess who did what :-) :

1. Amon Tobin & Jason Swinscoe
2. Squarepusher & ???
3. Squarepusher & ???
4. Amon Tobin & Jason Swincoe
5. Squarepusher & Luke Vibert
6. Amon Tobin & Coldcut
7. Amon Tobin & The Herbaliser
8. Amon Tobin & Luke Vibert
9. Squarepusher & Luke Vibert
10. Squarepusher & Luke Vibert
11. Amon Tobin & Luke Vibert
12. Squarepusher & Jason Swinscoe
13. Squarepusher & Luke Vibert
14. Amon Tobin & Aphex Twin

Wow! I'd never heard this one before... awesome stuff! It sounds so much like Squarepusher that it's hard to believe it's not him.
