I had always dismissed them after knowing all their familiar songs. but then I heard exile on main street, the 2 disc version and it's brilliant. been exploring the rest of their music and they don't seem to have anything even close to as good.

Love the Rolling Stones, always have done since a kid. They just have mountains of great tunes man.

This opinion was settled a long time ago (before I became a music nerd/chinstroker  ) so it's hard for me to see otherwise.

They are a great band, I can't bring myself to listen to them on my on my own time, however.

I don't know what it is. I LOVE some of their songs, like Jumpin Jack Flash, Paint it Black and a lot of stuff off of Let It Bleed (which I don't own), but I just never have the desire to actively listen to them. I turn em up on the radio tho. Some of Keith's guitar shit is sik as fuk. A friend of mine read his autobiography and said he uses tons of weird tunings and that explains why it never sounds good when other people play rolling stones songs. I'd like to read that. He seems like an fascinating guy.

OMG fuck them. I'll never forgive that bullshit lawsuit w/ The Verve. It wasn't even their version of the song. Cocksuckers.

Probably more Jagger getting on his high horse (or his lawyers) than Keith. Richard just seems like a proper dude lol, and having too much of a good time to even give a fuck about The Verve.

As for Exile on Main Street? (The album that the critics wet themselves over) I think is shit. Can't stand it.

Beggars Banquet, Sticky Fingers and the London Years 3 disc compilation. Loaded with classics.

I didn't "get" Bob Dylan for years until I watched No Direction Home ... stoned. Then I "heard" Bob lol.

But the Stones, all I can hear are crappy musicians playing boring songs for old white people. This is obviously because I am completely missing the context. Like the Velvet Underground, I trust people's judgment that both are great bands, and yet I think they both suck. So help me learn what I am missing, not hearing, so I can proper appreciate!

You either like the music or you don't. Simples. There's nothing to get with The Stone they aren't Autechre lol.

When I first heard the riffs for Honky Tonk Women and Jumpin Jack Flash as a kid it was a no brainer. Just too catchy to ignore, an instant hook/melody in the brain. Why I loved them so much is that they had piles of great other tracks too. I think if you did your homework The Beatles and Stones released 3 or 4 classic albums over a 2/3 year period. The work rate was immense, obviously they were in the zone.

wonder if they sued neil young for 'borrowed tune'?

How old are you Jim? Just asking because I think this is the problem. And an issue which seems to be confounding some other watmmers.

If you are an early teen or a youngster and you are discovering The Stones or Dylan or The VU or Led Zep, and by this I mean you are listening to most of their classic tracks for the first time with virgin ears then you are very likely to be bowled over. And in a massive way.

However if you are in your very early 20's or later and heard loads of shit by them on radio, tv, mtv, etc etc, (so they are sort of sub-consciously mundane and familliar) and then you sit up and think 'hey man I wanna get into the stones!!' I think you will be dissapointed because so much of their stuff has seeped into your brain since childhood.

Not sure if I am explaining this right, but you get my drift. Most Rolling Stones records I bought and discovered it was the first time I'd really heard them. I watched a Christmas top-of-the-pops years ago and they were doing a round-up of years gone by. The Stones were playing The Last Time which instantly hit me and I saved up my pocket money and bought Rolled Gold on tape. Trust me when Paint it Black, She's a Rainbow, Wild Horses etc (most of it tbh) came blasting out I was like What The Fuck Is This? Its Brilliant.

Wild horses is a great song.

If you don't like it your soul is dead to me.

And if you go from there, you'll find that a lot of their 60s content has something to say in some way. As for exile on main, well if you like a drunken south of france over dubbed and added to in the US. ala, i think the main thrust of the bands creativity had been exhibited before then. Shame that some fuckwit american lawyer type, protected by similar laws than those that protect the record industry from those horrible creative types today. happened to claim because of nothing more than a few squeezed togeather pieces of wood fibre, that he owned the rolling stones' crown jewels. That a fan didn't get the bollocks up to give him a bollocking, i'll never understand.

I thought so. It's too late lol!!

Exile On Main Street and Beggar's Banquet are Classics...

I've also always really enjoyed the Some Girls EP, my dad showed it to me when I was a little younger some great tracks on there... "Miss You", "When The Whip Comes Down", "The Girl With The Far Away Eyes" etc...

I grew up with the Stones, my dad was a fan, amazing band

Most of the new albums they released the past 30years kinda suck, but their older stuff is fantastic!

I guess -- I think it's kind of cool in a Krautrock kind of way, but maybe I have just never in my life been in the mood for this band?

My dad named me for his two favorite Stones.
