There are loads of DIY guitar pedal sites. I'd recommend just ordering a complete kit, so you don't get too bogged down in trying to source parts, or deal with the frustration of ordering the wrong stuff.

The Preen kit was pretty easy to build, and it's quite a flexible little synth if you spend some time with it.

But ya that site is a bit overpriced.

It's a great way to add on to your kit without breaking the bank, and also getting something that is unique.

Just chiming in to say that all the Oakley stuff is solid - Tony Allgood is a brilliant designer and generally a nice bloke.

ya his 303 project seems to be the best option around. I might start slowly buying parts for that kit... Would be awesome to have a little hardware acid setup :D

Paul Maddox's gear is also solid. Currently building myself a Gorf sequencer, can't wait to get it finished!

  • 7 months later...

I just found out about this little company here in the czech republic. Looks badass.

http://www.standuino.eu/devices/instruments/microgranny/

They make 3 kits. One is a kinda lofi granular joby, one is a 1 bit squarewave synth, and the other does some lofi fuckery with 808 and 909 samples with a sequencer and lots of weird mangling effects.

I'm actually going to attend a workshop later this month with them to build the granny. They're doing one in Eindoven in April I think too if anyone is located out that way.

I have built the nebulophone and the bitblob jr from http://bleeplabs.com/

relatively affordable, full kits, open source, low soldering skills required ---

The nebulophone was basically my first soldering project and it went pretty smoothly, though I'd recommend starting with the bit blob!

That said, if you're only going to get one the nebulophone is a bit more useful in the studio :)

I want to pick up a kit and try to learn about electronics, are there any effects boxes you guys would recommend for a beginner? Something that explains what the hell is going on while I solder it together would be ideal.

I found this "Confidence Booster" kit http://www.buildyour...confidence.html which I think I may start with but the rest of their kits are pretty pricey. In the future I may try one of the synth kits you guys are talking about, but for now I just want something that distorts whatever signal I put into it.

If anyone is interested in building a Synthi clone Derek Revell is doing a second PCB run and has/has associates with the rare components necessary.

Looks p sweet!
