I'm not a huge fan, but they have a couple of decent tracks on the first mix tape (I like Orange Juice and Oldie) - I haven't given their second one a spin yet. I think as they mature, if they stick with it, they'll be something good. But whatever, they ain't concerned about what a bunch of 30 year old white dudes are thinking anyways. They need to take some acid though. Fuck all that DXM/bath salts nonsense. And they're miles better than Lil B. Seriously though, jules, check out the Orange Juice track. The lyrics are a bit (just a bit) reminiscent of a certain Metal Face. You pretty much nailed it on the head there with what I was trying to imply. I wasn't trying to compare them in a musical sense to the Wu, but there is a lot of youthful creative energy in their music. Some tracks are better than others, as are some of their members. I say props to them for finding a niche and creating a brand at their very young age. Props to them for not doing what everyone else is doing. Earl Sweatshirt is one of the most lyrically astute rappers I've heard since Dan-E-O. Tyler the Creator helps create the presence and the focal point for their energy. I have, for a long time, hated what "mainstream" hiphop/rap has had on offer. I just found them refreshing! (And fuck do they make me feel old!) I think the "bad boys" aspect is key. My wife said something I really agreed with watching this video, something along the lines of "it's porn for teenage boys - skateboarding recklessly, getting sick from eating/drinking weird stuff, fighting for the sake of fighting, etc. but all in a very exaggerated manner." It's aesthetically conscious bad boy imagery. Instead of "gangsta" aesthetics it's more of a stoner and punk vibe. "Stupid shit we did in high school" instead of topics like gang violence and hustling in the ghetto. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78_loMbmKJ8 On 6/27/2012 at 5:38 AM, Joseph said: Finally some reason in this thread. Their music just sucks balls, even ignoring all the publicity crap they do. Comparing them to Wu-tang is just embarassing. This shit will be completely forgotten about in a few years, just utterly relegated to the rubbish heap I don't agree with this completely but I find it refreshing and straightforward. Any discussion of the group's artistic merit or originality is bound to be fucked by bullshit meta-debates over their cultural relevance. I've had friends with even less hip-hop knowledge than myself about how original and out there it is, to which I simply respond "no, it really isn't," as they are unaware of the multitude of experimental, left-field, generally fucked up hip-hop albums that have been released since the 90s. Yet any comparison to old horrorcore albums gets immediate dismissal from many fans. Hell, I'm sure even a half-baked suggestion that Odd Future has become a sort of ICP substitute for snobby hipsters would raise all sorts of angry responses. The few outright criticisms of Tyler, The Creator's homophobic and misogynistic lyrics are met with completely muted apathy from outlets like pitchfork. It's all a big turn-off. I dunno, I like what I hear but I haven't had that "holy shit this is crazy" regarding the level of my interest. It's likely going to remain that way...(opening death grips thread to continue listening to those posted videos) Edited June 27, 2012 by joshuatx Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Hide joshuatxuk's signature Hide all signatures Tape Escape! ghOsty
Yeah after shuffling through some more of the Youtube vids, Earl is definitely a FAR better rapper than Tyler, why does Tyler get all the hype? Earl needs to break-off and do his own thing not associated with the rest of the crew. Final point in this post - the Busta Rhymes comparison iep made is kind of on point, except Busta is 20,000 leagues better than odd future. :) especially Earl seems to be influenced by DOOM a lot, what with the polysyllabic schemes and ambiguous lyrics. also his delivery, and the way he often talks about himself in 3rd person. but not bad at all, for a kid.. ofcourse busta, in his prime, was just ways faster, intenser and wilder than these kids. but by then he had the experience, the cash, and the connections to pull off his egomaniacal style. jhonny
I really like the Left Brain and Hodgy Beats stuff by OF, and their collaboration as MellowHype is great. I agree that basically OF without Tyler would be a much more appealing setup. There's some great stuff on vol. 2 but it's all buried behind Tyler shouting 'bitch' repeatedly and I don't really feel his production. I do like (as someone mentioned) that it seems to have a punk/stoner angle rather than gansta, which is quite exciting for hiphop. The Progressive Era crew owe OF quite a bit (in terms of exposure, IMO Pro Era are just as talented), and the Joey Bada$$ LP is fantastic, a lot of great stuff on it.
