Girl talk is the equivalent to me of a painter taking 4 different artists paintings and with an exacto-knife and scotch tape and putting them together--- Although it may look good and I'm like 'yeah, those pop tunes sound good together' I still wish he would make his own music to make money off of, instead of taking huge chunks of other peoples material and putting it together with a little bow on top...

I do realize that every artist does this to some extent, as art cannot be made without elaboration on what made you inspired to make that art (using the same melodies, or a beat sounding like someone, ect.) but I think what he does is just plain cheap --much like the girls at his gigs (ZING!)

besides all that, I like it when I'm high and dancing, but then again, I like most anything when in that state... :emotawesomepm9:

I don't like what he did with the Sabbath songs. I grew up on Sabbath so that was a deal breaker for me

Little john rapping over Sabbath is acceptable though

If he manipulated the pop samples to the point that you didn't recognize them and then made something pop sounding out of them, while also subliminally giving the listener hints about what they've already heard, that might be interesting... as it stands, his music is at its peak the first time you listen.

Man I thought he just gave away all his shit for free - didn't realize he also sold it. that's kind of weak.

Culture-jamming/pluderphonics label Illegal Art released them - it's pay-as-you-want. If I recall correctly it's perfectly fine to download his mixes, err, "albums" for free. He makes most of his living of live sets I'm sure. Also, his first album was glitch heavy and far more experimental sounding than than Night Ripper, which made him famous. I think he even cited Merzbow as an influence.

I didn't like him at first, but I realized I was just annoyed at all the fans and press that over-hyped him as if mash-ups and mash-up mixes were invented by him. It was as if no one remembered Soulwax's 2 Many DJ's project years before Girl Talk blew up. The reason he's become more popular is because of his gimmick in using Top40 songs mashed with "classic" rock and pop. Soulwax did that to a lesser extent, if anything their better taste in music and frequent use of obscure and underground tracks is why I like them better. He's also annoyingly cited in that Remix: A Manifesto documentary in a way that's quite arrogant imo regarding copyright, but again, not his fault. I know there's hundreds of better individual song mash-ups out there, but I do find his mixes quite impressive and fun to listen to.

Girl Talk is great. I feel like you can tell from the way he mixes tracks together that he genuinely loves the music he's mashing up, and he often finds great combinations of instrumentals and a cappellas that fit awesomely on top of each other.

I don't think the point is that he's claiming to do something that no one else has done before, or to do it better than anyone else, but instead it's just fun. If I were going to a party, this is what I'd want to dance to -- familiar cheesy pop music in a funny and danceable new context.

Absolutely agreed. I spent more time describing my initial gripes over my overall approval. As a live performer and mix maker, I'd argue he's a more relevant, talente, fun, and sincere than most of those considered "superstar DJs"

i used to like Illegal Art... .until Girl Talk

He's a good mash-up DJ, bit his work certainly doesn't have the same wit or innovation as most of their other artists. He's a poor poster child for the copyleft and open source movements imho; it's just too gimmicky and superficial. I also have no idea whether or not he embraces that seemingly given role (at least in that Remix Manifesto doc) to any greater extent than what critics and fans have made of his work. Maybe Illegal Art signed him as a way to gain more followers.

This is the same label that released the Beck Deconstructed album, right? I just don't find his mixes that rooted in culture jamming. Stuff like the Banksy + DJ Dangermouse prank with the Paris Hilton CD's is a lot more in that vein than someone who threw Soulja Boy over Windowlicker. I'm sure there are other examples out there as well.

Do not like. I saw him live at a block party several years ago and it was mostly annoying nonsense, with dumb girls screaming and going crazy for him. He totally plays to the crowd. Shit, he left his station for a good bit and just went into the crowd like an egomaniac. His mixes were just playing on their own. Sure he mixed them himself at home or whatever. I'm just not a fan of mashups for the most part. And that's what he does. Combine that with overhype and he can suck my ass.

Fuck Girl Talk and everything about that douche... I can't stand the music it gets really annoying really fast. Sure it's fun to hear maybe once or twice through for the novelty, but there really isn't much artistic merit to it beyond that. He makes mash ups out of pop tunes and that's about it, within that there are far better mashup artists out there. Also, his fans are the most annoying fucktards ever. My former roomate was/is all about girl talk (like scrawled the words on the brim of his hat like he supposedly does etc...) for a while at EVERY party we hosted at our house he'd take over the stereo and blast Girl Talk like it was the best, most innovative party music ever. "dude you hear that mashup bro, so fucking awesome". He'd also blast it all the time without a damn party to dance like a retard at too. Most of the other fans of his shit I've met are exactly the same way. It's all a bunch of overhyped hipster bullshit.
