vamos scorcho
massively overrated and cheap. some of his stuff is OK but just another example of a cheap pop album getting passed off as an important example of the genre I found this today, MUCH preferred http://pitchfork.com.../8723-wild-why/ Quote The Tigerbeat6 website describes Wild Why as having "the structural rigor of New Music from the academy and the sue-me bravado of labelmate Kid606." This is pure hype; Wobbly's album strives for that personal attention, and that's something John Oswald, The Residents, and Negativland-- in the early part of their career-- went to great lengths to eschew. Perhaps copyright laws have relaxed over the past ten years, but Wobbly seems to be making a plea for the spotlight.Wobbly's a young, suburban kid, obviously keenly aware of his influences, and still insists on confronting copyright issues that, thanks to his predecessors, are already moot points. The content has clear precedent in John Oswald's work: Wild Why has some of the scope of a piece like "Plexure" (Oswald's dissection of the first decade of digital music), but with larger sample fragments, from a decidedly more recent gene pool. Also of note is the fact that Wobbly presents its work in a semi-accessible setting. It is rhythmic, divided into tracks that develop without complacent reliance on grating juxtapositions, and overall prove funny as shit. Aside from its function as passing entertainment, Wobbly's album lacks the strength of the more theoretical thinkers that preceded him, and it seems obvious he wants to contend with that sphere. Emphasizing American culture's unconscious repetition and recycling of ideas is no longer poignant; that practice has been thoroughly appropriated by the culture it spoofs (look at the MTV Video Music Awards). The blatant sexuality, and issues of race and violence in hip-hop music have been duly noted, from within the genre itself. Though the painstaking time and effort that went into this release are truly commendable, at a fundamental level,Wild Why only asks that quintessential American question, "Can I be famous?" Perhaps, as far as Tigerbeat6 goes, Wobbly just wants to be famous on the collegekid circuit, but what kind of cultural statement is that? tell me more about this "hype" you speak of... this attention seeking... wouldn't apply to 99% of the shitty artists you push on people, you cocksucking pieces of shit anyway, check out the album. it's nuts, and it's not just putting loops on top of eachother in ableton. it's MAXMSP, hilarity, and actually making something new out of found samples. vamos scorcho
I can't believe there are people like this in the world: AMAZON REVIEW of SECRET DIARY: I will be the first to say that Girl Talk's "Night Ripper" is simply incredible, and it never seizes to amaze me everytime I listen to it, which is approaching the thousands. This obsession led to a understandable Girl Talk high, prompting me to order this album. To be honest, I spent the first hour of owning it testing the CD in every disc playing device I owned, making sure that my ears weren't deceiving me. I was convinced the disc was severely scratched or damaged. However, I was completely wrong. The tracks are supposed to be like that. One of the most annoying things I can think of is a cd skipping, killing a mood. This entire album is intentionally like that, and it's repulsing. Purchase Night Ripper, which is nearly perfect, but under no circumstances purchase this album. vamos scorcho
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_D0jWV09vI Girl Talk - Friends 4-Ever (with Matt Wellins) Matt Wellins wrote that extremely negative review for the (vastly superior) Wobbly album. . . if it really is the same guy, which it probably is, he's a verifiably bad person Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/74601-girl-talk/page/2/#findComment-1845383 Share on other sites
baph
I guess to the extent one is actively choosing not to pay any sum of money to consume Girl Talk, I'm ok with Girl Talk. If anyone on watmm pays to see/hear Girl Talk, please translate prior reviews of "fun" into appropriate watmm critical benchmark in which Prometheus is a slap in the face to all thinking consumers of mass media and the Tree of Life is wank and Bit 4 is quite good, kthx Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/74601-girl-talk/page/2/#findComment-1845431 Share on other sites

I saw him live at a block party several years ago and it was mostly annoying nonsense, with dumb girls screaming and going crazy for him. He totally plays to the crowd. Shit, he left his station for a good bit and just went into the crowd like an egomaniac. His mixes were just playing on their own. Sure he mixed them himself at home or whatever. I'm just not a fan of mashups for the most part. And that's what he does. Combine that with overhype and he can suck my ass. oh no, he satisfies his audience! Sidewinder: was that in 08' @ cap hill block party? If so, we were at the same show. It sucked ass. Yeah that was it.
