HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE YOU TO WRITE A SONG

Recommended Posts

I think that basically everyone has their own process that yields the results.

As for me, it is variable. Some stuff is written in and finished in an hour, I have some songs that I'm still in the process of finishing six years years after they were started. It all depends on when the composition in question is ready to be finished.

I write music in a band setting (guitar, drum, bass, vox and occasionally a Leslie-equipped Hammond organ) and it varies wildly. I stick to bass and rhythm parts mostly, occasionally contributing a guitar part. Sometimes when we are all on the same vibe we jam something and can work the pieces into a legit song in a few hours. Other times we'll kinda mash something together, not be feeling it and let it sit for months and months. Then come back later and feel inspired somehow and make it work. I think the key is to just go with the flow, for me at least. I really dislike half-assing parts to a song just to fill up space or "complete" it. Each part needs a deliberate purpose and place within the song.

Recording and tweaking doesn't usually take long because we just record it live. But since it's a band and we don't need a lot of studio magic to create what we want to do, it's more like we bring a large group of completed songs into a studio and throw down in a weeks time and be done.

I really used to take ages to finish anything and got really sick of making music frequently yet having nothing to show for the time spent so I started this Ambient project I'm doing right now. Making a tune everyday. :D I really have to get it down to a finished track in less than 2 hours if I want to get any sleep at all. Babies are very unforgiving taskmasters. I've got a thread going in YLC about it. Blog's here > dailyambient.tumblr.com

It's really having a great effect on my process, and makes me a lot faster and more decisive about things. No time to noodle for hours with timbres haha.

Doing a new track every day for a period of time is a great exercise. I did the same thing back in February.

Yeah I did this in '08 or '09 and it really boosted my momentum. I'm due to do this again.
