I still can't help but think of Dungen every time I listen to these guys. They are good tho.

Yeah, I mean the thing is they sound exactly like Dungen.

Yeah. Except the musicians in Tame Impala aren't as proficient.

That's for sure.

I get it, Tame Impala make nice music, but they sound like a more marketable Dungen, and I just can't get over it. Dungen got the Pitchfork hype for a few years, started to get negative reviews for not making another "Panda" style breakout track, took too long to release a new LP, and Tame Impala popped up with English lyrics and fewer guitar freakouts during the interim, which Pitchfork then hyped without mentioning Dungen.

Which is just industry mechanics, really, and not Tame Impala's fault, but Dungen's music just seemed a little more interesting and well-executed (and also more volatile) to me.

I don't mean to slag them off, it's just.... a little weird. I mostly just feel a little bad for Dungen.

i am wearing this record out.

if you have to compare, it is much more flaming lips than beatles.

exactly... this album is more inspired by early 90s psych/dream/shoe than anything else

that's all true but Tame Impala are less indebted to Guru Guru than Stone Roses.

I doubt they could ever make bad music, they seem like one of those groups. I also don't think they could ever make anything great, which I think Tame Impala may have in them. Whatever that means. I'm pretty into this new album at the moment, though who knows how soon the postmodern condition hits and I realize that it's an decent re-appropriation of something someone else did better 20 years ago. The most important thing is that the songs they've written really sound genuine, and are really just well written. They're all there. The guitars scrape properly.

I've seen them 4 or 5 times. Always spectacular. Their lead guitarist Reine is a motherfucker.

His tone is spectacular, sensitive and subtle. His ear is fantastic.

Here are a few more wicked dungen tracks to scope out, Jules...

ok, no thread for it, this has some side track to it, but alt-j has completely won me over. good Christ that album is amazing!'

It's a good album, really a good album... They evolved a lot, their new album is sharper & over the precedent. There is not too much innovation, but very pleasant as album. I adored the title which sounds "Beatles", this title is the best track, 4 me, from this album, 4 the moment... It's the only title where there's mixture of the 60s with a background of the 90s... An impression 2 be at the same time in these 2 periods... rather magic, moreover!

This is album is really growing on me. I mean I still haven't even listened to the whole album through completely but.. Yea, listening to the first 6 tracks or so a few, some of the tracks sounded way too The Beegees or whatever influenced on the vocals, like he was going to high but those vocals have really grown on me and I'm less concerned that this isn't a great album. Pretty sure I'm gonna end up loving this album just as much as Innerspeaker which only has one or two tracks that aren't a hit for me.
