The Bloodhound rocket, which will take the first land vehicle beyond 1,000 mph, was tested earlier today.

Well the driver does. Everyone else will probably be ok.

Still extremely cool though, the mind boggles as to what travelling at that speed on land would be like. I presume it'll take quite a while, once it's complete, to get the perfect day for it; wind etc.

Cool stuff! My first thought was that if this is adopted, road repairs are gonna require a whole new class of blue-collar worker.. and take forever. Is the glass necessary, or can they (I wonder) engineer a new, harder translucent, insulating material to do the job instead? I bet it can be done, and I bet it can be done soon.

IBM's new microscope is first to differentiate types and distances of atomic bonds in single molecules

_62880798_62880797.jpg_62880035_62880034.jpg

"The results push the exploration of using molecules and atoms at the smallest scale and could be important for studying graphene devices, which are currently being explored by both industry and academia for applications including high-bandwidth wireless communication and electronic displays."

The interesting part, to me:

"The individual bonds between carbon atoms in such molecules differ subtly in their length and strength. All the important chemical, electronic, and optical properties of such molecules are related to the differences of bonds in the polyaromatic systems. Now, for the first time, these differences were detected for both individual molecules and bonds. This can increase basic understanding at the level of individual molecules, important for research on novel electronic devices, organic solar cells, and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). In particular, the relaxation of bonds around defects in graphene as well as the changing of bonds in chemical reactions and in excited states could potentially be studied."

not really actually, it wont take long to replace a panel at all, cause they are all separate pieces. just remove the one panel and put a new one in its place. they won't be made on the spot. so repairs would be much quicker than asphalt. and like they say, "we already know how to make glass repel the elements and make it at very cheap costs." and "glass can, in some cases, be stronger than steel." they just need to develop the process for this specific case. so really glass is the optimal choice as of now. but if they wanted to develop/use a different material as a cover that really wouldn't be a deal breaker.

i would love to see this implemented in my lifetime. like the guy says, if they did this to only the southern half of the US we would generate more power than our country even uses. completely severing us from foreign oil. its a brilliant idea. i try to spread word about this as much as i can. if they could get big government backing for this they could have these things on the road in a couple of years.

Startup claims it's created a robot that entirely replaces fast-food kitchen staff

This is the startup's website: http://momentummachines.com/

Quote:

Momentum Machines is a new San Francisco-based start-up that is planning to automate the burger production process. The company’s website claims its robot will save the average restaurant $135K/year in wages and overhead and that the machine will pay for itself in one year.

Quote:

Its creators believe their patty-flipping Alpha robot could save the fast-food industry in the United States about US$9 billion (Dh33.05bn) a year. Designed to entirely replace two to three full-time kitchen staff, it can grill a beef patty, layer it with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and onions, put it in a bun, and wrap it up to go – no less than 360 times an hour.

Quote:

Includes a great quote from a company co-founder:

“Our device isn’t meant to make employees more efficient,” said co-founder Alexandros Vardakostas. “It’s meant to completely obviate them.”

And how much does the machine cleaning and filling labour and servicing contract for this device cost? Perhaps in an ideal world it's price competitive with labour. But given how low wages are in the US, i not sure that i see any value in this sort of thing yet.

Still though, if they aren't over selling their numbers, then it's yet another service sector job gone. The sector that was supposed to replace manufacturing when they outsourced everything, if you remember. You lot are doomed.

Longterm it would save money easily, even with servicing etc... You would have contractors in areas with fast food rest and pay them to fix, update, clean the machines.

That device is awesome. Let the robots take mundane jobs, it will force people to find interesting things to do to sell their time. Working in fast food restaurants is a nightmare.

Seriously, no one aspires to work in fast food...

Also anyone complaining about this, I hope you don't buy anything from amazon, use self check out lines, or countless other things that hurt retail jobs all the time. Such hypocrisy. Not to mention how much better food will be and more reliable than the current situation where you always wonder if someone jizzed or spat in your big mac.

Yeah, like breaking into your house. These types of jobs are the last refuge for a massive underclass. Once they go, so goes society/the economy/whatever you want to call it.

It could make way for a saner economic system. Technological unemployment will definitely cause some trouble and wake people up to the fact that it's the system that's the issue, not the machines.

I'm part of that underclass, and I don't buy your rhetoric at all. Expendable lower-class jobs are not the glue that holds our society (/economy/whatever) together. Trying to stop the flow of technology in order to preserve shit jobs that don't need to exist is a completely futile exercise.

NO LESS than 360 times an hour? what if business is slow? that's a lot of wasted burgers per hour.

but isn't watching the persons in the kitchen do the food handling an integral part of fast-food restaurant marketing?

Every fast-food chain has the kitchen behind the counter so you subconsciously get a mental boner or something, watching people do stuff maybe multiplies the implied value of the crappy burger you're ordering? Ask Dr. Freud... This robot will not catch on.

Ultimately i like this type of thing being incorporated into lowest common denominator food outlets. Here in AUS the food prep is done by teenagers that truly don't give a fuck. And most of the time they do not adhere to the that companies basic hamburger prep policy. So there's never enough sauce or lettuce or the chicken patty is dry from sitting there for so long or whatever. Whereas when you have a machine in control, it'll all be standardised. Unfortunately you'll have to rely on that teenager to clean the machine. So opportunities for food poisoning will go up, perhaps.

As to denying the idea that there's an huge wave of unemployment, on the horizon. Well you think what you like, but we're part way through the process already. Hopefully you'll understand that over the past forty years, much of the gains made up to the middle of the 20th century in living standards for the population at large have been eroded, through the move from full time employment in the manufacturing sector to part-time hours for less pay and with worse conditions, in the service sector. And this is only part of the argument. But as usual, i don't hang around and fight these things out on watmm any more. You either get it or you will get it or you'll never get it. whichever, it's all cool.
