I've heard that the microkorg actually is really flexible, but that you need an editor to really do it. I have an MS2000 and I will never sell it. I wouldn't mind trading for the rack version though. :whistling:

Guest The Bro

Okay well I'm now the proud owner of a Microkorg so here are my innitial thoughts

The presets are firmly routed in electronic music. Quick access to the filter, resonance, attack and release gives you basic editing. Ifelt the filter was reasonable but didn't blow me away. Of the presets the Vocoders so far are my favourite as they sound very funky and with a bit of modulation sound proper dope. Personally I much prefer using a mini keyboard as you can get around the keys a lot quicker. I also just like the small size of the synth as its fairly light weight you can literally just put it on your lap and play with it that way. I haven't gone too deep into the editing yet and I plan on downloading the manual.

Overall I think its a fun synth and is suitable for me and my lack of space. When I get deeper into I'll post some more comments and further thoughts.

used plenty of microkorgs, was invited to a release event/promo thing for the microkorg this music shop at the x-scape centre in milton keynes (not there anymore i don't think, can't remember what it was called), and have used most other korg VA synths as well. i have just always been disappointed with the microkorg's reliance on presets and the (imo) thin, uninspiring sound. i just think there are better synths out there for the same money and have always been one to try and get/use something "different" from the masses - every cunt and his dog's got a microkorg... i said i'd take a micron over a microkorg, but i probably woudn't buy another micron if i had the choice (i would if it was a only choice between the two though).

i dunno, if it were my money, for three hundred odd quid i'd look into getting something more unique - maybe an old crumar bit one, or a siel DK 80, or just an old analogue sound module or something...

if you are on the move, a microkorg xl will beat all the crummy / gigantic 80s 90s wavetable crap you can find for 300 bucks. if you have any sort of talent or experience you will make any old freeware vst or microkorg sound good anyway, and as far as i can tell, the microkorg xl can be patch edited really heavily on the computer. i don't see how it is any more reliant on presets than the next synth? anyway, i used to think the microkorg was a toy, but looking into the specs etc., it looks just fine for what it is. it will never be a minimoog or an xpander, but it's 300 bucks. you can't even get a sh-101 for that these days.

I suppose it's patch reliant as editing can really only be done with a computer. Once you save some presets and detatch the computer it's almost like using a casio :D

in terms of standalone use i guess, not having to use a computer to edit etc

true, i mostly see the microkorg xl as something you would dig into patching at home and then you bring it to gigs etc. as an alternative to lugging along €3000 analogue polysynths. same goes for the micron.

if only talented ppl would buy synths the "synth industry" would be dead.

haah more like "if only people who knew about synths buy synths the 'synth industry' would be dead."

I'd say like 1 in 20 synths made now even appeal to people who are into synths. Roland, Yamaha, and all the rest of the main makers are not making anything interesting anymore. Come to think of it most of the actually popular synths ever made were completely popular by accident. I still don't think that Roland really understands what the 303 was/is. They literally meant it to be useful for singer-songwriter types LAWLS.

I think the microkorg fits that model perfectly though. It's not a synth meant for us types. It's meant for indie band keyboard players who need something simple and easily movable.

lol, yeah. Do most WATMMing on my phone these days. I'm not a big fan of the keyboard in general, I might do well to find a better one... that at least is one of the nice things about android.

Ok, so I only just noticed that the MicroKorg is different from the XL.

The XL looks like shit, but it does have the usb port. Might just get the original one real cheap and pick up a midi interface.
