very cool, had no idea. GIVE US YOUR WISDOM! hehe

That's just it, there really isn't that much wisdom. Sure, we learn from (some of) our mistakes but basically we are who we are. I have definitely learned to care less what people think of me, and my patience for telemarketers, spam, and the like has grown very thin after dealing with it over and over. Now I see why old people are so grumpy: they've seen the same old shit so many times that they're absolutely sick of it (coupled with the aches and pains of an aging body.) People like my 14 year old son don't understand this, he wonders why I'm getting so upset because to him it's "no big deal".

What I meant in my previous post about the 18 year old mind in the 80 year old body is this: I'm almost certain that if you still have your mental faculties at age 80 you still have many of the same desires as you did when you were 18. You still want to be attractive, you still want to have sex, and you wish you could go out with friends, stay up all night and be ready to go the next morning. But you're stuck in a wrinkled, withered, decaying body with not much time left (and it's flying by at an incredible speed from what I've heard.) At this point about the only pleasure you have left is good food, if it doesn't give you indigestion, heartburn or hemarroids. Ever notice how old people are preoccupied with food?

Bottom line is that as young people we picture the elderly as wise old sages that have lived a long life and have peacefully accepted the idea that their time is almost up. This kind of thing has been glorified in movies and literature forever, but I have a sneaking suspicion that it ain't so. Maybe it's just wishfull thinking so that young people feel comfortable about aging. But I have to say that I feel exactly the same as I did 40 years ago... until I look in the mirror.

I've heard that you start to feel old once you get to 60 or 70; that that's when you hit the "wise old sage" stage (read: the Parkinson's/Alzheimer's stage*). But then that's just what I've heard. I'm 19, and I feel like I'm 19.

*I somehow managed to spell both of these correctly on my first try. I'm proud of myself. PAT ON THE BACK FOR ME.

i've had similar thoughts as i've gotten older. i remember my dad at my age(41), and he was a man with all his shit together, with no fears or lack of self confidence in any area of his life. i realize now this is not really the way it was, just the way it appeared to me. this isn't any great revelation, maybe i'm too dim to have realized it earlier, but yeah, i have the same insecurities, dreams, desires, etc. that i've had for most of my life. except i'm less obsessed with star wars action figures and model airplanes.

And I'm alright with that.

My dad used to tell me he wouldn't make it beyond 40, when I was 6 years old.

If you have anything else in common with my dad, you'll want to live longer once you quit snorting mountains of coke.

FUCK YEAH 1987 :cisfor:

Oh-- oh, shit. He would have been the same age I am now. I missed out on my own debauched 1987. What am I doing with my life?

I was just teasing.

Please try to make it over 40, is all. Consider all of watmm your 6 year old son, who would miss you if you were gone, even if you spent all of the family's money on a phallic speed boat.

It's not often I hear anyone older than my close friends (around 30) talk about this subject so frankly, so it's cool to hear the perspective of someone further along for a change. I imagine I'll feel similarly, though at 18 I was a much different person than I am now mentally, and I think of that version of me more as a kid. I feel more like the 26 year old version of me now, and he's only 3 years younger than the current me.

It actually starts at 25, usually. You'll feel it when it happens.

I always thought you and Dr. Lopez were older than me.

I'm 20 and look like I'm 16. People still ask me what high school or think I'm talking about high school when I say I've completed two years if I don't then say "of university."

Bought myself a radiator for my birthday since the one in my car cracked. Best birthday ever, standing at a mechanic's shop as he replaced it.

BTW For an interesting read along the lines of what SecondaryCell was talking, but more focused on losing your mental faculties, I recommend this book: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Losing-It-Professor-Laments-Shrinking/dp/0300171013/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1343911386&sr=8-1
