Do you prefer your Aphex Pre or Post Drill n Bass?

This is a tricky question because the drill and bass era was in the middle of two eras. I would say i like pre-RDJ album apex twin more, Analord/Tuss era comes in second place, drill and bass era third place.

Completely agree with this.

with acid?

I like most the pre-Analord stuff. Although I like Analord stuff too, but I feel it sounds to clean. I was drawn into Aphex Twin partly because of the crunchiness of his sound.

electro mini-album Megacity Rainfall
"cacas in igne, heus"  - Emperor Nero, AD 64

I like his pre right in the middle post drill & bass music.

I always asked myself why Analord hadn't the same effect on me like all the other stuff he did. And finally, you answered my question. It's really this cleanliness, nearly sterility.

Warp30 anyone? A 4-hour selection.

Amon Tobin megamix sonic gravity pull in 3, 2, 1...

it's good, i like both approaches. on analord, instead of burying synths in effects and distortion to squeeze out a quite of an alien sound, he lets them breathe on their own.

Always had a hard time appreciating the drill'n'bass thing.

When I want some RDJ i normally slap on some ICBYD, SAW 1&2, Drukqs, Analords or The Tuss.

Only track I really dig from Hangable Auto Bulb is Custodian Discount

The Analogue Bubblebath ep's have some great gems on them, same with Melodies from Mars

Anyone notice that allmusic.com has a drill n' bass entry, yet the term is basically absent on wikipedia? I feel like it deserves a bit more recognition, even if it was basically a Rephlex/Warp trend (and within the "IDM" scene). Maybe I need to write up sections about it on the d'n'b and IDM pages :/ I mean there's an entire moombahton page now for fucksake!

IIRC, there was a wiki drill and bass page, but I remember seeing it getting removed by some deletionist moderator for "lack of notability"

might be able to find it on deletionpedia.

I think Drukqs was the perfect melding of both. Yes, we could have done without the 17 second nonsense throwaway tracks, but as an album it fuses some brilliantly-broken melodies with really creative and complex percussion. The drill-n-bass thing was more pronounced on RDJ Album (they were inventing it as they went during this period), but I think in Drukqs it found it's creative place and function in the music rather than just being a study/technique.

My 2 cents, anyways.

no such thing as a throw away aphex track. the more the better. I see his drill stuff as his guitar solo music. Its where he can cut up and spin our heads. Mangle 11 is amazing
