Forbes' Top 10 Highest Paid DJs

Though the term "electronic dance music" is relatively new, electronic music has been around for decades, first gaining popularity through influential early acts like Kraftwerk in the 1970s. So what accounts for the recent rise of EDM? Many prominent DJs credit the new avenues of spreading information that have cropped up in the past few years.

"I think what really changed was social media," says Tiesto. "Twitter, Facebook really helped a lot. It exposed things to a whole new world. Before that you only could hear [electronic dance music] on the radio at night. Day-time radio would never play it."

Forbes' Top 10 Electronic cash kings list:

1. Tiesto - $22m

2. Skrillex - $15m

3. Swedish House Mafia - $14m

4. David Guetta - $13.5m

5. Steve Aoki - $12m

6. Deadmau5 - $11.5m

7. DJ Pauly D - $11m

8. Kaskade - $10m

9. Afrojack - $9m

10. Avicii - $7m

Not many names I recognise. And if I'm not mistaken, no IDM. Mainstream is mainstream.

this my friends, is why electronic music will never, ever gain mainstream credibility (unless theres a mainstream MC over it). David Bowie made Low, Heroes and Ledger, yet hes remembered for Ziggy Stardust.

Well it's a list of a the most godawful, tasteless dance music DJs - honestly, he should be ranked higher in that context

Positive Metal Attitude

22 fucking million to spin some records? Goddamn.

So I'm not quite old enough to remember, but is it the same deal every time broad techno motifs enter the mainstream for a while? And by that I mean critics acting like this is the first time synth-based music has ever been popular

You win the thread. Best line in the movie. Well. Yeah, it's up there.

through the years, a man peoples a space with images of provinces, kingdoms, mountains, bays, ships, islands, fishes, rooms, tools, stars, horses and people. shortly before his death, he discovers that the patient labyrinth of lines traces the image of his own face.

Yes

Hasn't it been an insult to be called DJ "something" for over a decade or two now?

wtf? it already has. kraftwerk are very well known and very well respected, as is brian eno, jean michel jarre etc - what sort of mainstream do you mean? kids with dayglo clothes and candy bracelets? that's not mainstream, that's just a bunch of idiots.

I'm hardly a closed minded nun. Remember, I'm on a fucking IDM forum.... an IDM forum.. Think about that for a second before claiming people are closed minded nuns.

yea i was just pissed off and felt like bitchin.

I don't understand. They all sound so similar, then there are the thousands of other DJ/Producers that sound like them too. What is it that let these guys seperate themselves from the pack and make so much money? Is it remixes? Do work for a pop artist that already has a following, then your name becomes something that garners attention and it just snowballs?
