your favourite Ae beats

Recommended Posts

I love those tracks/moments where they lay down a tough head-nodding rhythm. post your favourite Ae beats here (for the 20th time).

my faves, in chronological order:

Latent Quarter from 4:15 onwards where the beat returns with a vengeance, fuck yeah. one of the best parts of Gescom's Strasbourg mix was when they dropped this with a rap over the top.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpePzwXm5jw

Chiastic Slide was full of boss beats but the best of 'em imo was the deadly closer Nuane, which I see as a sort of a precursor to Lentic Catachresis, another dense, intense finishing track. I love how it washes out after 5:10 and leaves just a skeletal beat with the menacing robotic blips and growls. night-time cruising music in an industrial city.

Yeesland! dat switchup at 2:17 where the beat comes to a skidding halt and re-arranges itself with the whooshes and the synth lines, amazon. Cichlisuite deserves more love.

C/Pach. this was one of my Ae starter tracks, it captured my imagination with its lovely upbeatness and was replayed many, many times. it's probably one of their most accessible tracks. somehow manages to sound crispy and juicy at the same time.

skipping way ahead in the catalogue to a must-mention, V-Proc. 'nuff said.

and so many more, haven't even gotten to the later stuff. and I missed Arch Carrier.

I guess the majority of my picks are where their hiphop influences show more, although there's other stuff going on too. Yeesland actually seems to mash hiphop and techno elements together in an awesome way.

I love Goz Quarter.

There's so many favourite Ae beats to choose from, not sure where to start.

I think I'll go with some underrated ones like the one in Hub. There's something I find really futuristic and atmospheric about the sound design, especially that looping beat. Something also very ominous and foreboding about the track, almost sinister.

Leterel has a really cool sliding beat. It reminds me of water for some reason. The track conjures images of an oasis in a desert for me. I have no idea why, I think the strings make me think of a desert and heat...

I guess the guy who posted the video kind of agrees.

Pir just has the happiest, most carefree beat Autechre have ever done. It's a beat that says hey, it doesn't matter about all the shit you've been through, everything's going to be alright in the end. Just makes me smile.

Fol4 on Quaristice Versions has a really evil beat that gets going around the 2 minute mark until the chaos engulfs it.

And how about Drane, to finish things off:

intro beat: what a way to say 'untilted is here'

almost an ae cliche at this point, but such technical excellence designed to make you feel seasick

2:58 when the beat kicks in properly. so propulsive, but chilled and dubby

  • pce freeze 2.8i. The sound design here is top-notch, yet so simple. Subtle perfection.
  • Clipper. Oh yes. Charging through the streets with these beats in your ears is like driving a tank.
  • Second Bad Vilbel seems to be oddly underrated on here. There are many highlights, but the breakdown at 6:08 is fucking insane.

Also, dunno if Cichli has been mentioned yet but that's an obvious headbanger. Nothing beats that 5/4 crunch...

Also cheers to Goiter on the Jail of Freedom recommend, that's got to be my favorite remix they've ever done.

Ok, so just all of the key nell variations, despite the repetition

And the fucking gorgeous groove that winds down Sublimit
