Avatar while poorly written is way beyond any hollywood blockbuster of recent in terms of tech and ambition. And there's no way you make the most expensive film ever and not play to cliches... his goal is money, yes, but that money will be spent on future projects that continue to push the tech forward, so visionary filmmakers can produce CG films that are actually good... it's an ongoing process and I appreciate what he is doing.

i actually think that's not a good idea... :(

What about it? Are you opposed to virtual reality?

People already do that... but the possibilities of virtual reality interfaces for creativity are too great to suggest we have hit some kind of sweet spot.

Perhaps, but how can you be certain? 10 years ago personal computers couldn't do what they can now... did you fear its possibilities then?

I disagree that the tools are at fault, I also disagree that new tools can be understood initially to be used correctly. It's a process that takes time to reach new levels, just as computers started off unable to beat the best grandmaster at chess.

I play chess on my computer, again... its not the tools that are at fault but how they are utilized. The initial films in the early 1900's were just like trains on a track or shots in a city. This was amazing at the time for people because no one had seen anything quite like it. But as we progress the tools became more streamlined and advance. The Digital era is fresh and I contend that it will just take time before we hit a point where the tools are fully utilized to benefit ideas. Right now the ideas are the tech.

I never mentioned his use of technology. I said he jumped on bandwagons.

I'm not gonna deny that I find a lot of films boring nowadays, but I'm not gonna just attribute that to technology. I would wager you've watched stuff that has heavy compositing and you never even recognized it.

I dunno - to me the shaky cam stuff from Blair Witch was way more annoying than anything in Transformers. Different strokes I guess.

Its. not. about. the. technology.

Im assuming you are responding to other people taking the original critique wildly out of context; if so, fair game.

yeah yeah - it's about the misuse of technology - which to me reads as "directors are being lazy because of the easy technology". but like I said - the dross put out now will be forgotten, much like the dross put out in the '60s or '70s, or '80s or '90s etc etc etc.

It just seems like a cheap shot at mostly crappy movies. Again - maybe I have like super-heightened spatial awareness, but I never had any troubles following what the fuck was going on in any of the clips he showed - even with them muted.

For me, i don't think the use (or misuse) of technology is what Expendables suck, or Transformers be nothing more than 2 hours of CGIfest. It's crappy storytelling for me, combined with actors who can't emote their way out of a paper bag.

Yup. I feel quite old these days, also because most great movies are all back until 80's

www.petergaber.com is where I keep my paintings. I used to have a kinky tumblr, but it exploded.

safe! things have got worse since CG effects started to replace real actors/models/sets/costumes

imagine:

knight rider with a cgi car

the a team with a cgi B.A

star wars with cgi instead of all the amazing effects (oops)

looking back at the matrix, some of the cgi stuff still looks cool, that's because the plot of the film is based in a computer world, so it makes sense to use computer graphics. but the real world stuff with the sentinel monsters is just generic and crappy. and the superman scenes are shite. effects should be as believable as possible, the further they get away from reality i.e. the fewer physically real actors/objects/items they use to do the effect, the shitter it is. original star wars is cool because those spaceships were real models. as a kid you could imagine yourself riding in one of those X wing thingies. these CG bullshit things are bullshit crappy feces fecal bullshit from a cow's ass. UDDERS.

I still think Terminator 2 has one of the most properly used cgi ever. Sure it's not as realistic as can be done today but its filmed in perfectly!
