What it makes me remember is moments where I've realized that there is no objective beauty to the human face, and actually had my ability to recognize someone's face as familiar -fall apart. A number of times I've looked at people's faces upside down or even just normal for awhile and whatever facial recognition wetware I have just stopped functioning, the ability to understand the placement of eyes/nose/ears looked completely alien and destroyed. Mind you, these were times I was sober, too. The brain filters faces in a specific way that bends reality, constantly.

edit: god that gif is so fucking weird, every time I do it I become more aware of the bizarre things my brain is trying to do, most of the faces look like spooky african masks or neo-primitivist avant garde art...my brain turns clint eastwood into a skeleton but that's not relaly a stretch now is it

Yeah, I've had similar things happen with my facial recognition wetware. It happens to me quite often when I meet people I know well, but don't expect to see at that moment/location. There's a brief moment when their faces look like complete strangers, I just stare at them, before their features shift into place and I'm like, oh shit it's you, what a strange face you just had on.

This explains a scary moment in my past. I was watching my ex-gf's face for a while and it became a bit demonic. I shit my pants a bit but now I see it was all an illusion.

This reminds me of an article about caricatures and facial recognition. A lot of police departments have actually lobbied for using them instead of the vague artist sketches that they use now.

My wife and I are constantly looking at faces, random strangers, celebrities, etc and comparing them to others (finding dopplegangers, or "could be related to..." conclusions) or just breaking down their features - good, bad, ugly. Personally when I'm bored I imagine someone's face as the opposite gender - if it works just as well both ways then they have a truly aesthetically pleasing face. Fascinating to do, kind of starts weirding you out after awhile. I swear too that sometimes you can tell someone's nationality/ethnic background from their faces as well, basing it off your knowledge of certain citizens of said group.
