I may be wrong but I think it's just snippets of words and slang, and names of modules and patches - no real meaning to them.

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

Wasn't there a site that had (possible) explanations for about every autechre track/album title?

edit: http://autechre.wetpaint.com/

  Quote
r ess

1. "R S" . Possibly a reference to Rob and Sean, members of Autechre

2. Pun on "iris"

ilanders

1. Could be related to "islanders"

2. Could be a pun on "Anders Ilar", a Swedish electronic musician and producer

known(1)

1. A pun on "No One"

pt2ph8

1. Could be pronounced as "path to faith"

2. Could be pronounced as "point to fate"

qplay

1. There's a free console-based audio player called "qplay"

2. There's a company dedicated to High Definiton multimedia engineering called Q Play Inc.

see on see

1. The title brings to mind Kraftwerk's "Metal on Metal", though the track itself bares no resemblance.

st epreo

1. A pun on "stereo"

krYlon

1. Krylon is a brand of spray paints, as Sean was a regular tagger before forming Autechre.

2. Could be pronounced as "cry alone"

Yuop

1. In the Kraftwerk track "Trans Europe Express" the word "Europe" is pronounced more like "Yuop". A few times Autechre mentioned being influenced by Kraftwerk, so this may be an inside joke/tribute.

2. On a QWERTY keyboard the letters Y U O P are on the same row

Didn't one of the 'chre guys mention in an interview, that they just come up with titles that looks cool?

I remember something like that too. The interviewer asked what their name meant, and one of them said "the first few letters were just random mashing on the keyboard, and the rest just sounded cool" or something along those lines.

If the title of this topic was "New Ae Album title and tracklist announced" I wouldn't have thought it to be dubious.

This is actually one of the things I love about autechre... the cryptic track names are neutral. A lot of the time, I see a track title and I immediately have some expectations about the song. If it sounds different than I interpret the title, then it seems off. Also, sometimes track titles are just lame and it takes a bit away from an otherwise awesome track (for me, anyways). With autechre, the focus is just on the track itself... then the title begins to conform to the actual sound of the track itself.

That's how it goes for me anyways!

That's kinda how I see it too. The names are so abstract that they don't set any preconception on how to interpret the track itself and are distinctive enough to remember instead of just using some numbering scheme or "Untitled" or similar.

I mean when there is some instantly discernible meaning in the track name, somebody's going to try to fit it to the track. For example this review of Untitled:

Song titles are typicially useless in the world of IDM, and Autechre are no exception to this rule. Anyone looking over the track listing might be fooled by the presence of a track called “The Trees”, simple among such heady labels as “Pro Radii” and “Iera”, but really, this track has no more to do with any kind of peaceful arboreal scene than the rest of the album: it begins with frantic percussion and evolves to dizzyingly complex heights before dissolving into static.

Personally I always thought that The Trees referenced to a tree like structure, like the tree data structure or graph and not the actual plant..

Funnily enough that's why my username is MCBPete rather than MancubusPete (a hangover from the 8.3 DOS filename restriction days)

Absolutely. I don't try to decipher where the track titles came from, but rather I try to abstractly attach them to the track. Maybe it's just my imagination but I find that a good lot of the track titles almost sound phonetically similar to the sounds and structure of the track.

r ess flows smoothly off of the tongue, q-sho dub is bouncy, iera is squeaky and creepy sorta. Nuane just sounds massive. I could go on ad nauseam but this could all be a result of psychological ties that have been long cemented in my mind.

On the topic of a 7 track long LP, I fucking hope they do it. I need more gargantuan journey pieces that undergo multiple phases of metamorphosis. I'd bet a pretty penny I'm not the only one who pines for that sort of return to form.

Agreed. The tracks give meaning to their titles, not the other way round, and that is one of the charms of Ae. Although I generally prefer the worded titles to something like 7439086t-y0 from the Quaristice era.

I would also enjoy a return to 10 tracks or less of metamorphic epics on a future LP, but if they see that as retreading, then thats cool.
