I can imagine the meeting when they were planning the AMA .. "We need 30 of our hippest internets to answer questions from the internet, we have an election coming up you know .. we need voters. Oh, make sure to tell them to use ermm what are those things call .. mimis? mems? whatever!, it will give the illusion that the president is one of the them"

"what are you going to do to end the corrupting influence of money in politics during your second term?"

Money has always been a factor in politics, but we are seeing something new in the no-holds barred flow of seven and eight figure checks, most undisclosed, into super-PACs; they fundamentally threaten to overwhelm the political process over the long run and drown out the voices of ordinary citizens. We need to start with passing the Disclose Act that is already written and been sponsored in Congress - to at least force disclosure of who is giving to who. We should also pass legislation prohibiting the bundling of campaign contributions from lobbyists. Over the longer term, I think we need to seriously consider mobilizing a constitutional amendment process to overturn Citizens United (assuming the Supreme Court doesn't revisit it). Even if the amendment process falls short, it can shine a spotlight of the super-PAC phenomenon and help apply pressure for change.

i don't care if obama typed that himself or not, i think that's an excellent answer.

i wonder if he can swap comment karma for actual cold hard cash; if he could pass a bill allowing this, reddit might actually save the economy in the manner they generally seem to think they can.

thats a great answer, now to just follow up on that in reality.

he's just telling reddit's demographic what they want to hear.

genius political strategy though, he's gonna win over a lot of those young adult voters through this.

i don't live in your country, but i'd sleep sounder at night with obama at the helm for a second term than i would with romney regardless.

i was just thinking about the fact that reddit is so fucking big now that the most powerful man in the world just did an AMA there. that's kinda scary.

does anyone actually think magical underpants mormon romney has a chance at winning? like, seriously? southern christians will absolutely not let that happen.

and religion aside, people are pretty satisfied with obama. even republicans are digging his changes to our insurance system. i can't see people voting out the incumbent when they're relatively satisfied if they didn't vote out bush's stupid ass for all the crap he got us into.

And I would prefer James Buchanan over Warren Harding. Country is still fucked up.

.. and thats reddit downfall, look at that front page, fucking awful. You have to find obscure subreddits to find something worthwhile. Everyone on reddit likes to think they are the intellectual part of the internet but they are just fucking Facebook rejects.

Thats why their hate for 9gag is funny to me, its like they hate their front page (thats what 9gag is, reddit's frontpage)

If you let the scum in you'll become scum. Reddit opened the gates to the general idiotic public and now they are paying the price. I mean being a redditor is a fucking stereotype now for fuck sake.

you just answered your own gripe. i will admit that the default subreddits are absolutely execrable, but i figured that out within a week, unsubscribed from them all within a month, and found some really good niche subreddits that now make up my front page. saying reddit is crap is like saying the internet is crap. reddit is massive and there's a subreddit for every single fucking thing imaginable. what you see or don't see is entirely up to you.

yeah, i've pretty much unsubscribed from all the default subreddits except for science. there's tons of cool smaller communities, but i have noticed a trend between the size of the community and degradation of discussion. at least that usually ends in the formation of new communities. take the evolution of r/gaming for instance. r/games sprouted off when r/gaming became a meme repository and then r/truegaming became relevant after r/games started turning into crap (aka gaining a larger population).

my favorite subreddit these days is r/subredditdrama tbh. it's funny stuff.

ahahahaha another SRD devotee. i adore that subreddit. it's brilliant.

also

r/talesfromtechsupport

r/askscience

r/bestof (especially now that submissions from default subreddits are banned)

r/worstof

r/explainlikeimfive

r/explainlikeimcalvin

r/photoshopbattles

r/stoyaxxx

I have never gotten into Reddit. Didn't it even have blatant child pornography going on some of their creepiest subreddits? I can see it now.."GOP:Obama visits child pornography site"
