FIFA 13 or PES 13

I debated putting this in the video games thread or maybe even the Football subforum...?

Alas, I am going to be playing the early release of FIFA 13 this weekend in preparation for my yearly debate/decision.

It's more difficult this year since the PES demo seems much stronger than the last few. PES 11 and 12 were bleh.

Based on both demos, the gameplay of PES 13 is arguably superior. Unfortunately, Konami is still dogged by horrible presentation and a crappy manager mode.

The attacking side of things is excellent in the FIFA 13 demo, but CPU defending is atrocious, as evidenced in the review from IGN. Watch the goal from Aguero at 1:36 in the video review.

So how about it, WATMM? Any footy video gamers wanna chime in on the debate? I mostly play offline / manager mode in these games and FIFA 12 was excellent with one notable exception: player growth was totally broken so the Youth Academy was a useless feature of the game. I fucking detest EA Sports for doing that sort of thing. They knew it was broken for months and did nothing. Why? Because it's a great selling point for the next one. "Hey, we know it sucks now, but just keep on keepin' on and buy FIFA 13!"

To be honest, I’ve been tempted by PES 2013 this year for the first time since PES 6 on the PS2. It really looks like they’ve finally made a good go of it on the next (now current) gen of platforms. Lord knows it has taken Konami long enough.

Also played the second Xbox 360 demo the other day with a mate, and was pleasantly surprised. Really thinking of getting this for PS3.

haven't tried either yet but PES hasn't been any good since playstation one japanese import Winning Eleven 4 - that was the best football game ever, might get the fifa 13 demo for pc today then, have a look

All EA sports game this year are really bad compared to previous years.

Madden 13 was just the same madden game as 10 or before.. i bought and sold it with in days.

NHL13 feels broken, problems with no penalties being called all game. tried to add realistic skating which looks cool, but for gameplay its like trying to run in quick sand. slight improvements on presentation. GM connected mode is a great idea, if u can find a league (i cant)

Fifa 13 demo. more of the same, dont see any real difference in the game then fifa 12. no doubt i'll get roped into buying it. still think fifa world cup 10 was the best fifa game. it felt heavy and realistic. maybe im just getting tired of no real massive improvements, untill maybe the next gen consols come out.

To me the Fifa demo has vastly improved AI from the previous game. I'm buying it day one.

I've played PES 2013 full and the FIFA 13 demo a bit. I was a big PES fan around PES 3-4 but FIFA has been the better game for years. I'm pretty good at FIFA, division 1 online player in FIFA 12.

FIFA is still a more solid game with a more advanced animation system, more natural physics, tight controls, less buggy situations and so on. This year adds some new good stuff like variety in ball control, vastly improved positioning and opponent AI, better anticipation of defenders and the usual shitload of new player animations. This game has a LOT of high quality mocapped player animations for so many situations and despite the usual bugs their impact engine stuff is actually quite neat. It just pisses me off the game still can't properly judge fauls.

That said, I think PES shows a lot of strengths and is catching up slowly. They've been doing some neat innovative stuff with off the ball controls. You can aim for a player with the right stick and tell him to make a forward run or you can even control him directly by pressing the stick. Tactical options also feel more refined and actually seem to matter in PES. The gameplay pacing has vastly improved and quick passing feels much better than it did before. Dribbling is more explicit than FIFA, you really need to count your steps and time your moves. Most importantly, it just feels freer because the outcome of a long ball, shot or run seem much less predetermined than in FIFA. There's a lot more randomness and a need for precision to it which makes it feel more real and engaging in a way. On the downside, keepers in PES 2013 are still absolutely horrible. A lot of the goals will be complete shite because of weird keeper behavior.

I think that's just a low difficulty level. I can't score that easily on legendary in the demo.

October - I hate how they release FM every year. What am I supposed to do with my current game on FM12?

I play on PC occasionally. Despite being FIFA gamer almost from the very beginning of series, i immediately stopped with FIFA after trying PES many years ago. I have played some of the recent FIFAs on Play Station, still doesn't compare for me.

The best football game is Football Manager without a doubt.

The last couple of years I've been pretty much let down by PES, so this year FIFA shall return.

If they called it ISS Pro then I may buy it again.

I've been a fifa guy all my life. I played the PES 2013 demo and it feels alien to me.

Fifa has every league licensed, in PES teams from the premier league have weird names, i can't get pass that.

got pes 13 today, good crack but no online play obviously. a bit arcade style and transfers have not been updated which is very poor considering time of release. but seems ok without being great ...

I got a hold of PES2013, it's nothing on FIFA 13, which is a shame.

I was always ISS/Wining Eleven fanboy, but FIFA 10 onwards has been the daddy.

The problem with PES 13 is that it gets a very few important things just right, mostly related of course to gameplay. However, it uses annoying CPU scripting and the presentation, atmosphere, and overall UX is abysmal.

FIFA gets away with many aspects of crappy gameplay because the licenses and aforementioned UX is amazing.

Also, they've fixed Career Mode this season so player progression and the youth academy are now useful. I have a 16 year old center back and he's already gained 4 points of Overall ability in the first season.

What exactly have they got right with PES this year and how does FIFA get away with it?

The control aspect alone in FIFA has much more depth and response in it. The ball is all over the place in PES, it's random even with their first touch system, which FIFA stole and made 20x better.

Passing the ball around in PES2013 is so alien. It speeds up then slows down for no reason. Tackling is absurd, FIFA's new system is much, much better.

I play in division one online, and the games I have are much, much more realistic and fun than PES is at the moment. You have soooooooo much more control over the ball with the different types of dribbles and speeds AND directions that are possible.

Spent 4 hours playing FiFA yesterday, its fucking awesome. Slick gameplay,etc,etc.

Picking up my copy of Fifa 13 on Friday.

I'm also partaking in an ESPN fantasy football league at the moment with a huge group of friends, great fun. I'm kicking ass, I have no idea what I'm doing, what the line-up is or who the hell I'm choosing for what or who any of them are but everyone hates me it's awesome.

I hope someone responsible for the idea of Tactical Defending dies a brutal rape death. Seriously the worst thing to happen to any game ever.

why? playing PES without FIFA's new tactical defending is going back into the dark ages
