My favorite brand of instant noodle as of late is Nong Shim.

However, if you've ever been to Japan and tried their ramen, you'll realize it's not the same. It'll alter your understanding of ramen.

While I really like Japanese fresh ramen, I'm not a big fan of their instant ramen (not that I've tried all the varieties, but what I have tried I haven't really been down with). Went to Santouka (famous ramen chain) last night, so good.

Korean instant ramyun (like Nong Shim's varieties) are fucking dope though!

Yes. Fresh Japanese ramen = sublime, instant Japanese ramen = disappointing. But Nong Shim is the fucking shit. Best instant noodles and best instant/junk food for an icy day. Much love here - I even have a Nong Shim shirt :D

That's exactly what I mean - the fresh, handmade soupy ramen you get at ramen shops, not the packaged dry powdered crap. Oh man do I miss a hot bowl of shio-ramen in Sapporo..

I rate them equally - I love Korean ramyun, especially when you add your own shit to it (and yes keltoi, processed cheese is totally legit), just as much as I love japanese fresh ramen.

Ramyun and Ramen...I don't think the similarity in words is a coincidence.

They come from "lo mein", at least according to this Momofuku cookbook I bought for my wife for her birthday last year.

Not surprisingly, Japanese culture owe a huge debt to Chinese culture, and they do their best to convolute the evidence of that.

Yup, a lot of that took place during the Heian era from the 8th to the 12th century CE. Even the installation of the Imperial Court was more or less based on the Chinese model.

Oh sorry. Were we talking about noodles?

I cooked up some yakisoba about an hour ago. I still like shio-ramen more though, especially on a cold day.

Uh you gotta go back a bit further than that - there's lots of evidence that there were "diplomatic" (for lack of a better word that doesn't require a long ass description) missions between China and Japan going all the way back to the time of Himiko and Yamato Wa (first reliable contact between the two was in AD 57). of course, don't forget the contribution of Korean people to the development of Japanese culture as well. If you like this stuff, check out the book "Ambassadors from the Islands of Immortals".

Otaku - please note I am not saying that Japan doesn't have their own distinct culture.

I had fusion last night - soba with some homemade thai peanut sauce. Bomb diggity!

Pot Noodle - The classic.

article-1285921962557-0279AFC5000004B0-483163_223x335.jpg

Thing is, they never give you enough soy sauce in those little packets. I keep a bottle of soy sauce for the purpose. And those little packets you save can really turn out to be useful...

With Pot Noodles, you've gotta give it enough time to soak up all the hot water. Just be patient, stir it a few times, and you've got yourself the real deal.

Now playing: The Black Dog - Pot Noddle

pot noodle... the skrillex of noodles.

also back to the adding of processed cheese... i thought people from the orient tend to hate dairy products... a chinese friend said so anyway, that they can smell dairy product emanating from the round-eye and it disgusts them.

Sounds mental, but for me the Chicken and Mushroom ones are perfect for modifying to make an amazing broth for the noodles to soak in - a dash of tobasco to give it a bit of bite, some extra soy sauce (as you mentioned) for richness, and a squirt of tomato sauce (honestly!) to add a sweet tang to the aftertaste, and finally (optional, but works like a charm to reduce next day hangover if returning from a night out - the only time I have pot noodles !) some grated cheese on top that's left to melt to slightly thicken the sauce. Perfick, if very chavvy.

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

Ahhh, don't knock it till you've tried it - But either you'll think it tastes nice and helps soak up the booze, or you'll spew your guts out and get rid of the drink that way - both ways you win the next day (though one is a little messier)
