The Vengeance Trilogy is popular...so the fuck what? Did you watch them all? If you haven't, you should. One film I particularly enjoyed was Daytime Drinking. [youtubehd]z5FBSTtnD2w[/youtubehd] reminds me of funny times and also horrible, regretful times I had on many a drunken bender in Korea. chenGOD
Sorry, didn't see the "not popular ones" subheading. Both of the ones Ego recommended are really good. You might also try "oasis" - from the same guy who did "peppermint candy". "Attack the Gas Station" is hilarious. "Welcome to Dongmakgol" is a really sweet (if somewhat predictable) movie. "the King and the Clown" (Wangui Namja) is a stunning film, that captures a little bit of one of the saddest stories of Korean royalty and also has some great satire of the state of Korean politics at the time. Also "The Isle", "Bad Guy", and "Samaria" by Kim Ki Duk will probably leave you both entertained and somewhat appalled. They're very different from "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring". Smetty - yeah it had its cheese, but taegukgi is still probably the most emotionally powerful war film I've seen. I bawled like a little fucking bitch the first time I saw it. Guest Al Hounos
Obviously anything by Kim Ki-duk. Anything by Hong Sang-soo - "on the occasion of remembering the turning gate" "hahaha" - master of dialogue and relationships. pretty low-key films, but fascinating in the little insights you pick up about how people interact. Anything by Lee Chang-dong - the already mentioned poetry, mother, oasis, but my personal favorite of his by far, is the incomparable "Secret Sunshine". It might be my very favorite modern film. There's plenty to read about it because it did get a lot of attention internationally, but just watch it. incredible. as for weirder... "Bad Movie" - might be hard to find but i eventually downloaded it. Documentary/drama about street kids in Seoul. Really out there, great bizarre korean hiphop/underground soundtrack. Really was an amazing find for me. "Lies" - by the same guy as 'bad movie' - basically two hours of whipping and sex, with a story somehow squeezed in. better than it sounds? or as good as it sounds, whatever. also, i second daytime drinking. good catch. really good insight into real korean (not Gangnam-style) culture. also, if you haven't seen it, i thought Thirst was a great vampire movie. really sexy... Finally, if you want something old, The Housemaid (1960) is a pretty striking piece. Really great atmosphere, chilling, and pretty risque for 1960, in an autocratic Korea no less. Yes, I love korean movies. Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/76130-korean-film/#findComment-1892212 Share on other sites
