Also, please do elaborate on the system you are building. PC specs are like porn to me.

edit: tried to fix URL tags about 5 times now, I give up. all devices should have direct links but they won't work for some reason. google for them if you're curious. here's what I have built so far

Saw a bunch of tablets running this at Best Buy. Geniuses had them all locked with an admin password, so useless. Typical Geek Squad stupidity.

i've read some more about it, chances are it'll work and activate just fine, but then no one gives you guarantees that it'll completely overwrite all of the info about the previous activation. so it's not like you're "stepping out of the shadow" in microsoft's eyes with this upgrade.

Well if this successfully finishes installing, I'm gonna try wiping the hard disk completely, and then trying to install a 'fresh' Windows 8 from the upgrade disc (because it does give this option). Should be interesting to see if it works, and if it does I'm cancelling my Amazon orders!

if you're using the same keygen as me, i don't foresee problems. what it does is to grab OEM license keys based on your hardware, and they give out OEM license keys like they're candy.

Most annoying thing for me about Windows 8 is the lack of BIOS. I still don't know how to work around UEFI to install live CDs.

because of the 'fast booting' thing i'm guessing you don't normally see the bios booting up. i bet you have to do an actual restart to access the conf menu.

Updated my gaming rig on Friday to 8... everything went smooth, no driver issues or anything. Installed Start8 to get my start menu back. Very pleased with it.

nope, Windows 8 does not stop any computer from doing a POST (Power On Self Test, also known as "the BIOS screen" to most people)

Windows 8 does, however, hibernate it's own kernel. this has no bearing on the POST at all.

friend of mine got a new laptop the other day - pre-installed windows 8 - looks absolutely awful and completely unnecessary for laptops (although i can see it being OK with smartphones/touch tabs)

just doing something as simple as opening an image creates horrible unnecessary steps

defo dont get it if you can help it

I've been reading up on Windows 8 the past few days, and there are lots of improvements under the hood which are a massive benefit to every computer user that is wanting to squeeze more performance out of their machine and be more efficient about it.

But if you don't like the look of it, that's understandable - I don't like the Start screen either. Luckily there are 3rd party solutions cropping up to step in.

Such as?

Browsing through the feature lists the only thing I found that is of some remote interest to me is the revamped task manager. I doubt it'll match the features of Process Explorer though.
