When the 500 came out I'd read that it had no pattern mode. That would be a deal breaker for me.

A used 1000 always seemed like the best value, though friends tell me the older mpcs have a better sound to them.

i heard the 500's are cheaply constructed....

mpc 3000 is the best one. has the rock solid clock; the best build quality.

3000 is supposed to sound the best too if you want 16 bit.
