i like chipotle too much to be a hipster

You didn't get the memo?

Chipotle is hipster kosher.

chipotle is too mainstream

People tell me I look like the default character when you get to create your own character in a video game. Is this un-hipster? *tries harder*

Hipster doesn't mean shit anymore really. "Hipster" could be the authenticity, but people also call the whole "irony" thing being hipster, which is about complete inauthenticity. That's why people have crosses upside down and copy paste religious symbols a bunch of times, it's why they slow down pop music, it's why my avatar is a cheesy rest in peace sign and my sig is an anime girl with sparkles. It's why there's music like this. I'm pretty sure it's why Andy Warhol painted soup cans. It's about ironically being as inauthentic as possible to expose the vapidity of our commercialized existence.

Does Warholian irony really expose the vapidity of image culture or just embrace it? When this kind of detachment also is also a detachment from people, it probably isn't worth celebrating.

Good question. Both probably.

whats with the mason jar?

i've never even heard this was "hipster." we use mason jars in my house since we have a crap ton from my gma in law who sends us canned (well, in jars) food. when they're empty we do use them as drinking vessels. does this mean i'm an hipster? or, perhaps, a 'ster?

Hipsters are similar to briefs, but are worn lower down the body, with the waistband around the hips.

no. mason jars only qualify as hipster when you bring them around with you in public so you can drink your organic chocolate soy milk from it (I HAVE ACTUALLY SEEN THIS HAPPEN!!)

out in Oakland and SF we have sort of this art scene hipster who feigns knowledge of the history of underground art in music in the same way my mom and dad feign knowing how to use computers.

And to be fair i think if you haven't been to NY, sf or places like Portland and seattle you won't get a true look at the full blown hipster scene at least in the US. Hipster as it's being used in this essay is way too broad and encompasses a lot more than the hipsters i'm talking about. You just have to see this shit for yourself
