lots of great names on here

https://elemental95.bandcamp.com/album/95-elements

Ooh aye, I got one on there too. All the glitched loops in my track were from a faulty copy of Monsters: Dark Continent I downloaded, hah. Good comp.

Congrats on the 7", Lane! Didn't know Adhesive were stretching out into vinyl.

Been out of the game a bit myself, but have three releases coming up soon: a split tape with MindSpring Memories, my side is a 20 minute slushy sax lullaby; & a 90 minute album on Swamp Circle. And my tape for No Problema is finally in production and should be out soon. Only started the fucker in 2014.

He's a long way from vaporwave now, but HKE's new one is pretty solid. OESB is doing a vinyl run of Ferraro's Human Story 3 on the same imprint too.

Thanks Purlieu! I'm still waiting for it to ship myself, very stoked. Oh wow congrats on getting a tape out on No Problema, legit for sure. Cool about the rest of your upcoming stuff too. I love the Swamp Circle label, they always put out classic vapor/muzak and have interesting themes to their releases.

anyone heard Remember's Welcome To Axico Industries? Cant remember if ive posted this before, but i seriously cant get enough of this album:

The evil corporation / cyberpunk theme is strong on this one.. makes me wanna grab some burger king french toast sticks for breakfast.

for me, computer dreams self titled and deleted self release is probably the truest VW album. but internet club's stuff is classic too. this isn't a definitive statement, just what i think as someone who was an enthusiastic pursuer of this music from 2010. to me, true vaporwave was made by people who were making it as an escape from what was before, a defiance of the current trends etc. (cliche statements about nascent art movments), not as emulation. i had the idea in my head before i heard other people making it, but other people made it before i tried. i never thought any of the big beat st pepsi esq stuff was quite pure. for me, vaporwave had to have broken production values. that's where the beauty was.

ever since i learned the term vaporwave, it all started to feel so fleeting. that's the sad/ maddening thing. i've moved on in a way but the spirit is still with me. it was a really hard thing to do...

a dead mall (differentiating mallsoft is really dumb to me) is a good starting point, or maybe the photography of brian ulrich as a moodboard.

dark with a hint of hope, minimal, compressed. cold flickering fluorescent lights with echos of past promise/hope...

Internet Club is one I always come back to.  There was one cassette (or maybe CD-R I never had a physical copy of it) from early on, '10 or '11 I think, that was a single 40 minute or so track, sounded like it was recorded live in a basement or something and really highlighted the drone roots of this stuff, but I lost it in a hard drive crash in 2014 and can't for the life of me remember the title or artist now so I haven't been able to track it back down - that was one of my favorites.  I've always been more of a dabbler in vaporave though, by the time I really started paying attention in 2013 (because people kept recommending artists to me after they heard the 90s cable TV soundtrack inspired stuff I was doing back then) it seemed like the feeding frenzy was already in full swing and I wasn't really comfortable self applying the label (I mean I never really am, but more so than usual).

It's interesting to wonder how many other producers like you made vaporwave stuff before the genre / scene was firmly rooted in 2012/2013. I still feel weird about the size, scope, and broad "definition" of it now.

Good album. Might be my least favourite Remember - maybe just a tad too long and heavily conceptual in places for me - but still some excellent stuff, especially in the second half. The dubsteppy closer is incredible. The world-building storytelling approach to his music is brilliant, though. His next record Dream Catalogue should pick up where the male protagonist's story left off at the end of Route Back Home. The track I've heard sounds like it's going to be another great one.

Oh, turns out I got a release out today! Split with MindSpring Memories. I think I was listening to a lot of telepath when I made that track, haha.

Ooh I'm loving this so far... Great use of phasing/modulation on that pad... And i really like what im assuming spring reverb its drenched in. Very good vibes and matches the cover art which is one of the best ive seen recently (:

We need more of this

Beautiful ! Sad Horizons sounds like a lot of "classic" vaporwave that I like, and your track has a wonderful vibe going on - it does sound like the end of the world in fact !! Congrats

Could have been, none of that artwork looks quite right but it's been a while.

I wouldn't call anything I've done "vaporwave" exactly, but a lot of it draws from the same kind of palate (late 80s/early 90s library and soundtrack music especially) and I guess shared roots in drone, although I'm more from the psych/space/krautrock end of the drone spectrum and really only started to get back into electronics heavily n 2013 after a pretty long break.  But yeah, when I hear the term "vaporwave" I still think of the stuff that was happening before and when I first really heard about it (which is around when it started to really blow up in early 2013).  Not that genre labels and definitions matter too much really.

I only realised whilst re-watching it recently that all the Black Lodge scenes were pretty much the progenitor of the vaporwave aesthetic.

So you're not missing anything per se, logically, but most heavy sample-based vaporwave is actually much less about musical production/craft/ability, and mostly about presenting selections of altered audio and recycled/found internet-sourced art and packaging it through concepts and atmospheres it would never have otherwise been connected to. Pretentious... Lazy... Adolescent? Maybe, but it's a rich movement nonetheless. If you can try and think of it (at least the heavy sample-based examples) as less of -a music genre with "artists"/"albums", and more of an internet art/sound experiment ... And instead of artists the creators are more "strange djs", or "curators" "editors" etc, putting out "mixes" of slightly warped stuff theyve found and collected to put into one bizzaro mixtape, then youre more likely to appreciate and enjoy vaporwave in all its ego-less dada-ist glory.
