Its that time o' the season...what are your favorite Xmas songs?

Recommended Posts

Despite my occasional atheist militarism, I definitely love (in a secular way) the holiday season. One of my absolute favorite parts of the season is hearing those occasional morsels of tradition that you carried and loved since you were a kid. So, with the Xmas spirit in mind, what are your favorite Xmas songs?

This is mine, without a doubt, unanimously, and ONLY this version:

some others that come close:

an old classic that I always dig (cmon, you know you love those sweet guitar licks at the end of every bar)

This is another classic....I love the little drummer boy but only this version...everything else is too much...I feel like Little Drummer Boy is the closest Xmas song to ambient/IDM, i need to make a version of this slowed down with added ambient reverb:

This is one that probably isn't all that popular, but I really dig it for a number of reasons:

1) Its Sting from the fucking Police....he can make as much new agey shit wank he wants but he was still in the fucking Police

2)It seems to try to capture the feel of these older baroque hymnals

3)Its almost a round....and who doesn't like rounds?

4) Crazy ass reverb......on second thought this might be more IDM than Lil' Drum Guy

5) Makes the whole Xtian legend/myth behind it seem that much more mysterious/epic

and then of course, one of everyone's favorites (and if you say you dont like it you are full of shit and you should die):

what do you all say?

I'm hardly a closed minded nun. Remember, I'm on a fucking IDM forum.... an IDM forum.. Think about that for a second before claiming people are closed minded nuns.

If you're going to start judging all music by how "IDM" it is (and we are on WATMM) then my favourite Christmas song, Simply Having A Wonderful Christmas Time by Paul McCartney, is the clear winner:

Why do I like it? It's just so weird for a Christmas song. It doesn't really have any hooks or a catchy sing-along chorus, the arrangement is really sparse, and it's based around a big squelchy Prophet V line. And what's with that weird solo around 1:28?

I'd say it's more of an industrial Xmas song than an IDM one, but whatever. It's incredible.

I dig the Crosby/Bowie version of Drummer Boy, it's one of the oddest duets ever.

Oh, and the Bob & Doug McKenzie version of 12 Days of Christmas is a classic.

dark humour xmas, christmas drinking anthem

watch this with the family each year, kind of a tradition since 1996 or so. Love this song. Apparently Angelo Badalamenti did the soundtrack for this.

Since I was small the voice of Crosby crooning Christmas songs has always been, well very christmassy. Sounds like he's sitting in a big soft chair in front of a blazing fire in a cabin in the woods sipping on some brandy.
