William Basinski - Shortwave Music Reissue

William Basinski's first album Shortwavemusic has been reissued as a tape reel by Indiana based record label Auris Apothecary, for the 30th anniversary of the album's creation.

Basinski created Shortwavemusic in 1982, using sounds recorded from the radio, edited into loops and slowed down. Auris Apothecary has recorded the album on to 1/4 inch tape on recycled reels, in reference to the way Basinski constructed album. It was originally released on clear vinyl by Raster-Noton in 1998, and was reissued on CD by 2062 in 2007.

The label, which produces objects as much as it releases records, has a back catalogue full of awkward formats: cassettes coated in shattered glass, wrapped in leaves and filled with sand, as well as olfactory CDs and a double floppy disc.

This reissue of Basinski's Shortwavemusic (released on 31 December 2012) has been produced by Auris Apothecary in a run of 101, and comes with artwork specially created by Basinski for this release.

...hahaha, 2012?

"Saddle-stitched 8-panel transparent mylar booklet" - damnit, why didn't anyone tell me about this release earlier, it'd sit perfectly on my hand crafted pan-european mid tudor influenced ceramic/marble shelving unit

Holy shit.. that review..

music is information, all information is inherently material, and all that is material will be consumed in our universe's incessant march towards total entropy. Plenty of wankers will still buy this I reckon, fair play to the Bazz

They have and they did (if by 'Out Of Print' it means sold out) in under a week. Out of interest does anyone know how much they were being sold for ?

p.s. Has anyone seen the batshit insane formats this label puts things out on. Tape reel is one of the more normal !

Unplayable 10'' record made of glue anyone ?

i once bought from them a microcassette which was inside a candle. to play the music, you had to burn the candle then get the tape out. still haven't finished burning the candle through so i haven't listened to the music yet.

Personally if I was to release a lo-fi tape of noise and cover it in human excrement I'd record it to Type I and not the higher quality Type II chrome, but that's just me. Based on this, it looks like the Finns are the first to catch up with the batshit insanity benchmark set by the Japanese noise scene.

I bought a cheap microcassette player/recorder on a whim, thinking I could sell it on ebay (it was an early model) but also figuring I could play around with it in the meantime. I returned it when I realized that no one sells microcassettes beyond niche stores on ebay.

It'd be fun coming up with format ideas:

My Dealer's Digits (limited run of 50)

Resembling chopped-and-screwed (in name only) music made on pirated software with stolen DJ equipment, this essential production captures the ethos and spirit of freestyles made by Middle America's premier local pot dealers and aspiring rappers. Each release comes with a prepaid cell phone and exclusive number to call - once dialed, the artist will answer and playback the release from his voice message inbox in all of it's low bitrate majesty. Exclusive reviews available in 240p on youtube.

Paper [clipped] (limited to 40, each unique)

Extreme digitally saturated waveform reproductions of various Christmas no.1 singles, hand constructed from the bending and straightening of rusted paperclips glued onto distressed sandpaper. Digital copies available on Bernoulli cartridges soaked in batter and fried in Belgium.

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

The next William Basinski reissue is going to self-destruct after it's first listen.. it's going to be hella cool.
