I looked on Discogs for this particular Chappell disc and couldn't find it. Not sure if I'm looking at the right spot...

Yup, that's the correct label. There's a lot from the series missing on Discogs, I can't exactly remember how many are in the AV Series but I think there were about 30 in total, so quite a bit to search for. Although I can imagine it being pain to find the whole series, they usually go really cheap as they're not exactly collectors items (they turn up quite often at the local charity record shop here and are never more than £3), although if more people are spotting samples from them I wouldn't be surprised if their value goes up!

Also, just as a demonstration to what the AV Series mostly sounds like and how frequently they're sampled, here's a comparison of Rick Baker's "Skyline" and Paul White's "Road Rage" that samples it (the clips are only 15 seconds each so hopefully this doesn't violate any rules, but please mods / admins delete the attachment if it does!)

I did a bit of digging around, and found these:

http://www.musicstack.com/records-cds/chappell+-+av+series - mostly for 9USD each

And this chap's Flickr stream has covers with tracklistings of several in the Chappell series as well as other obscure "library music"...

Apparently there's a whole subculture of people who collect library music. Remember, even Rephlex put out some Delia Derbyshire etc. Personally, I like that Tomorrow's Achievements that was released by Public Information last year.

those interested in library music should definitely check out the ghost box label. they sample the shit out of it, and julian house's excellent cover designs are very library inspired.

Yes!

I second that motion.

Studio G and Omnimusic have interesting stuff. This is good as well: http://www.discogs.com/FC-Judd-Electronics-Without-Tears/master/405235

library music is huge. there's tons of new stuff and following of the old stuff.

oh, and rephlex also put out black devil which is a project by two library music 'superstars', bernard fevre and jacky giordano, both of which had amazing library records in the 70s on labels like l'Illustration musicale and mp2000.

This is probably a good time to briefly mention Raymond Scott, who lived up to the idiosyncratic engineer mythos even more than the Twin does. :) I'd recommend the book about him featuring a double CD set of some of his work, named after his company, Manhattan Research Inc. Though I have a few of the Soothing Sounds for Baby series, and as much as I like them (Fingerbib even reminds me of Lullaby a bit), I can see why they didn't sell well given how kinda ominous some of the tracks are. :D

Richard paid him a trillion mint to keep quiet.

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

it was useless if you wanted to sample it anyway cause the record was in poor condition and has tons of pop hisses and scratches

Do you think Aphex needs counsel in Los Angeles? Aphex, I am available and my rates are reasonable (I will work for DATs (and also money)).

Frankly, I'm with Moby on this one:

  Quote
At one point I ran it through a Pro Tools filter that can get rid of surface noise, but once I'd got rid of the noise I felt like a lot of the interesting character of the vocal had disappeared as well, so I just decided to leave the vocal with all the scratches and surface noise.

Noise doesn't bother me at all. A little bit of background noise creates such a nice atmosphere. There are a bunch of songs on the record where you can hear some SMPTE bleeding through, or you can hear the noise of the room in which the guitar was recorded, for example. I hate sterile recordings. Life is messy and there's no reason why recording shouldn't be. Let the patches be messy and let there be a little bit of noise, and if it's a really irritating noise get rid of it. If making it pristine means that the recording's going to be wonderful then great, it works for some people, but I think too many engineers and musicians get focused on this arbitrary idea that recordings have to be pristine and sterile. Some of my favourite records are really messy --- you can hear the human element there.

Then again, I like Mellotron and Orchestron samples...
