is Confield AE's best album?

Recommended Posts

I don't even know what my favourite AE is. It changes with my mood, ranking Confield, Draft, Untilted, Chiastic, LP5, EP7 and Quari is an exercise in futility, they've all been listened to an obscene amount of times.

I think Draft might be my personal favourite... but then.. Confield has Eidetic Casein... I don't even know.

many here might disagree but the era you're (lumpenprol) talking about is when autechre virtually de-throned aphex twin as the kings of idm. The Joyrex 'quite good' comment sums up the sort of Druqks era finale of the Aphex Twin name which left a big enough vacuum for AE to step into. Whether this had much of an effect on their sound or not is hard to say.

Yeah, if Autechre just released ambient albums or something with a lot more commonalities than their actual discography I could maybe definitely pick my personal "best" but as is seems impossible to decide on fully. Maybe in 20 years after they've all aged a considerable amount one album would reveal itself as the most innovative and timeless album.

its still my favorite, though draft and oversteps are right up there too. but confield was the album that helped open my mind to so many things about music (electronic and otherwise), so its got a special place. to think there was a time when I thought everything after LP5 was inscrutable wankery... :emb:

I wouldn't call it my favorite, but Pen Expers is something to behold and is fucking wonderful. The line of tracks from Pen Expers to Bine hold some of my favorite Autechre at that. The way Sim Gishel morphs, the atmosphere of Parhelic Triangle and how it makes me feel like something is rotating, and the mayhem of Bine.

No.

Curious to know which Ae albums you do like

1. Chiastic Slide

2. All the EPs from Garbage through Cichlisuite (I guess these aren't albums but they give me that same juicy album satisfaction in a compact package.)

3. Quaristice

4. Tri Repetae, Amber, LP5, Incunabula

5. EP7 (yeah, this is definitely an album)

6. Confield, Draft 7.30, Untilted

7. Oversteps, Quadranges, Gantz Graf

Yep Confield is definitely my favourite too. Still remember the morning I heard it - a warm spring day and the angle of sun was just reaching my room when I put the CD on, creating triangle shards of light that seemed to mirror the artwork perfectly.

Took me a few months to 'get it' fully but I remember having an instant love to Parhelic Triangle when the sounds of the gamelan noises did their thing.

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

I still feel like I haven't totally "got" Confield. The sound design is pretty awesome and there's some pretty masterful handiwork with the mixing and pacing. It just doesn't have the emotional impact that some of their earlier (and later) stuff had. It's quite good though, and the fact that I haven't got it yet makes it fun to listen to.

That's it, end of discussion.

Well for me I'd say no.

Simply for the fact it's an album I have to be in a specific mood for. Whereas LP5 I can stick on anytime and it ticks most Autechre boxes. LP5 gives me the nice full AE fix.

Confield is brilliant though, and I get what you mean. It sort of represents a pinnacle of Autechre. It does take their sound to a place where you look into the distance and just see a abyss. The last stop and final destination on the line if you like

I suppose I'd have to agree. Not so much mood, but environment for me. Pretty much all other Ae material I can put on whenever and whereever I feel and just enjoy.

I love Confield, but when I listen to it, I need to isolate myself in a dark room and focus. If I tried listening to Confiled on my iPod at work, I'd never get anything done as I'd be so pulled in to the headspace i'd cease to function

fixt

ep7's "left blank" was the second track by autechre i've ever heard after amber's "nine" which i thought was very sweet, but "left blank" along with confield later pretty much changed the whole idea of music for me.

I met Sean Booth once and asked him what some of his favorite Autechre tracks were. He named a few obvious ones (like Piezo) but the only album he named was confield.

You don't seem to be bullshitter, but there's some grotesque feel in your story in its current form. Please elaborate.

my most played ae-track is "Perlence Suns" - so while I really don't like the Quaristice album (far too sketchy with no real depth) I like the vast array of tracks you get to choose from if you combine quaristice + versions + the quadrange eps. Most of my most played ae-tracks are in the "ae 2008"-playlist. I guess I like that abstract ambience many of the tracks got...

yes, you did + page not found.

I think the universe is trying to tell you something here.

Yeah, I think it's trying to tell me that doing any kind of fancy quoting on this forum is a lost cause since all the goofy updates.

I met Sean Booth at http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?32358 and I asked him what Autechre tracks he liked best were.

He answered: "my favourite Autechre tracks?!" and then started naming them.

Among the tracks he named was the only album he named, which was confield.

Also, I asked him if any new Autechre was in the works and he said yes, that one was mastered a few days or so before, which became Quaristice.

I knew about Quaristice since 6 October 2007.

I asked him when it would be out and he said not until March 2008; that there is a six month tide when releasing near the holiday season is not the best idea, in his own words.
