this shits all over the sega genesis OST, the original arcade FM synth chip is so much nicer sounding than the mega drive.

Star Wars: Dark Forces (1995) had some badass FM Adlib SoundBlaster music. This game was pretty much badass in general, even to gamers who aren't really Star Wars fans. I don't want to go on too much of a gamer's tangent, but also it was innovative in many ways, even though it was overlooked to some degree.

This is the music from the final mission aboard the Arc Hammer. (slight resemblance to Autechre's Arch Carrier track title)
Although the sound quality has a bit too much treble for my liking, the orchestration is awesome.

Is the music from the original DOS version of Lemmings FM?

Anyway, one of my favorite computer game/VGM soundtracks and probably the earliest I can remember from childhood - all the tracks are here.

Dark Forces was a really ground breaking game when it came out, i seem to remember it being one of the first FPS games where you could jump duck, fall too far and die. Didn't it also have a look around feature?I'm sure it was a ray-traced game like Doom but it felt much closer to a real 3d game. I don't think that it was until Quake where i was as impressed by an FPS engine

Dark Forces did have a look up/down feature, in addition to secondary attack modes and right-handed weapons. Probably the first FPS ever to do so.
Supposedly LucasArts reverse-engineered Doom's engine and made their own for this game.

I still have the original CD-ROM somewhere, albeit with a generous number of scratches on the underside.

One interesting thing about Corncob's FM SFX was that some of them them were dynamic, not just simple replays of sequences. As you got closer to e.g. an alien power source the modulation would get harsher. It created a really visceral, skin-crawly effect and sadly I haven't heard this effect in other games since.

Just nit picking but Marathon had look up/down and secondary attack modes a few months prior...

there's something in both these tracks that place me in an FM tropical pixel melt down atmosphere, some of you might explain why i feel this, i mean, it's not a question of timbres, there's something in these kind of harmonies/melodies that place me there, i guess it's just space jazz/blues...

i guess the intros kind of help too...
