Just nit picking but Marathon had look up/down and secondary attack modes a few months prior...

I don't consider that nitpicking. That's probably even more overlooked than Dark Forces was, and one I've actually never played. Looks like it's based on the Doom engine, but designed for Mac users.

The original System Shock (an ancestor of Bioshock) is worth mentioning as well, which came out in 1994 I think. You could jump, crouch, manage inventory, use different ammo types for each gun, hack computer terminals, and even venture through virtual cyberspace. And in relevance to the topic title, it too had some dope Adlib SoundBlaster music.

there's something in both these tracks that place me in an FM tropical pixel melt down atmosphere, some of you might explain why i feel this, i mean, it's not a question of timbres, there's something in these kind of harmonies/melodies that place me there, i guess it's just space jazz/blues...

i guess the intros kind of help too...

Yeah, I totally understand that feeling you're talking about. Galaxy Garden had that all over it. Besides the chug guitar that first track you posted really reminds me of it, specifically this track:

great stuff, has anyone out there on the internets bothered making an FM-drum sample pack? Like the general midi drums, or just a pack of adlib drums. I ask because i rarely hear people using those and opting for sampled drums instead

I remember back in my DX7 days that there were plenty of percussion patches around (the DX excelled at that) and the odd drum kick and snare but as it wasn't a multitimbral synth as such kits weren't really made for the DX i.e. you'd have to sample the sound in which case you may as well use sampled drums anyway but this isn't ruling out videogame music/FX

the Machinedrum has FM drums but thats not going to get you that retro sound

yeah im mostly talking about the drums found in DOS adlib games or Windows general midi circa Soundblaster 16 era. Max/msp is pretty good for making these kind of fm drums, AE used them a lot in LP5 and EP7. I'm just lazy and want to sample from the original kits. Thanks for the link sweepstakes, ill check those out

edit: also earlier megadrive games used them a lot too, it wasn't until maybe 2-3 years after its inception that most music programmers started using sampled drum sounds

What I'd love to see is an Ad Lib emulator VST plugin. Not sure if such a thing exists yet.

I am considering using 100% FM synthesis in my next track though - percussion, pads, everything...just for experimentation.

Nice track BTW, very retro. Funny sample in the middle, too :)

VOPM VST + the megadrive rip packs are the closest you're going to get. The mac OSX version unfortunately can't load these packs so without them it's pretty hard to achieve that sound. Brian E made his 'Dusty Cart' album entirely using this plugin

a lot of the early Front 242 stuff is full on FM core, i listen to them occasionally. It's aged better than a lot of other EBM stuff from the 80s. Clock DVA wipes the floor with them, but they don't use much obvious FM

most ebm sounds like cheesy trance imo, except from front 242, DAF and nitzer ebb.

go check out Clock DVA if you haven't heard any, they are probably one of the best acts on Wax Trax besides Front 242.

also, somewhat later period ebm but i always found a certain appeal with Leather Strip. Lots of fm synth in that too.

anyone know where to find real or close Doom 1 & 2 abdlib rips? Some joker on youtube thinks his adlib soundfont cuts the mustard but it sounds sort of shitty to me

I know Cex seems to use more and more FM stuff these days and it's probably safe to say the main clonky sounds are FM (not sure about the strings, they sound more mellotron-like). Either way it's a bloody lovely track -

yes, 89!

one year ago i would find it extremely cheesy and whatnot, and would definitely prefer their pre 80's, as i do with most rock bands.

but i'm so glad i discovered TD now, i'm in a phase in my life where i'm a sucker for cheesy FM sounds and finding out TD 80's music came pretty handy...
