Site for game-music producers

This is an excellent idea. Itseems that a lot of people on here would be interested in this field of work, myself included. I'll read through the ideas you guys have and see what I come up with. Cool stuffff

All sounding awesome.

SoundCloud integration perhaps? Like a field on the edit profile page for entering the URL of a playlist to use on the profile.

What wahrk said.

Maybe links to SC and Bandcamp and other music sites, so that the game people can hear what else the music people make, besides the game music on this site ['this' being the new site].

ya I was thinking about that. I was thinking to release promo EPs, which would of course live on a BC page. It's a question of trading off consistency of presentation (some might have a SC page, others not) with convenience. For sure there will be at least a place to link to it. Cost-wise it would be better to not host all the sound files on the server.

Another crappy thing about SoundCloud is that people tend to remove stuff after a while, and that might inadvertently cause a profile to break...

Checkout this audio player library. I'll most likely use some variant of this to make sure that there is good cross-browser support.

i like the format (specifically the inline list). itll be easy to navigate. maybe have several different category sections on the front page like "recently uploaded", "Most popular", "upcoming artists", "developers choice (basically people who have a high ratings if you use a rating system)", etc, and it would show the top ten in those categories. then you could click the section and it would arrange all the music according to the category. it would double as a a quick search function.

Pretty much the same as what I said.

I got a chance to work on this a bit more last night, so here is an updated spec.

I'll probably quit posting these after this, but if anyone wants access, let me know and I'll add you to the google doc. I'd like to take it private as I think it's quite an interesting project. :) This forum isn't closed enough to be comfortable leaving good ideas laying around haha.

Here's the User goals. Think there is anything more that would be really NEEDED in the first iteration? I would like to start it simple and gradually add in functionality as we need it.

Artists must be able to:

  • Upload tracks and tag them

  • Enter info for profile page

  • Add previous projects in various formats (video, audio)

  • Track page views and search results

  • Respond to project queries

  • Find and use IP contracts

  • Promote their own pages via social media

Admins must be able to:

  • Track searches

  • add / remove artists

  • Monitor usage of tags

Devs must be able to:

  • Contact artists

  • Listen to tracks

  • Browse profiles

  • Search for appropriate music

  • Call for pitches easily

  • Leave references for artists

  • Add artists to pitch while searching

And the USP (selling point):

Which benefits are the most important to your customer?

Ease in bringing multiple artists into a pitch.

Ease in finding artists for a project.

Save time by eliminating need for research.

Find reliable talent.

Which benefits are the most difficult for your competitors to offer?

Easy to use search for music.

Ease of contact.

Variety of musical offerings.

Which benefits can be most easily understood by my customers?

Save time.

Easy access to many artists.

Artists create pitch for your project.

No additional costs to dev team for using service.

Any more ideas?

Thanks for the input!

I don't have any ideas to head off the top of my head, but I'd definitely like to be on the doc to keep up with and give feedback for the product. Any way I can help, I will.

OK cool, just PM me a gmail address (maybe non-gmail would work too) and I'll add you as a contributor. I have a bunch of work coming soon, so I'm trying to make some progress on this while I have some spare time. :p

Limit the number of tags users can use. Otherwise they will use every tag under the sun and people looking for quality won't be able to find anything.

Also: Make it invite-only.

exactly my plan actually. We'll have to grow a pool of tags to cover everything I think.

ya crowdfunding is a great idea. How exactly do you mean? I don't think something as wide angle as kickstarter would work for this. Maybe there is some other way? Mail fraud? :D

Just so that you all have a realistic idea of a timeline, this is quite a big project, and will likely take at least 6 months to get operational, as it will be only done in my free time. I don't want to pull a bitwig and make everyone's panties wet, only to take 2 years to deliver. haha.

IndieGoGo would probably be better.

oh wow ya. I heard about that but never checked it out until now. I'll definitely do that once I have some design done. I will do this for sure, but getting some gogo-money would make it even easier (to justify to my wife) haha.
