(true it was mostly all 4/4 stomp) but still it sounded neato. soon as i heard UI mega mix by mike dred i knew i had to get one! and when i got it i wasnt let down. but i guess its how you use it. but the 606 will always have a special place in my heart (& music) Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/7795-tr-808-sales/page/3/#findComment-278225 Share on other sites
Severian
The world don't move to the beat of just one drum, of course :). Universal Indicator's are great, indeed, but for me and my music and what I want to do in terms of drum sounds and whatnot, a stock 606 does not fulfill my needs. If I were making acid like you it'd go along side all the other Roland gear and be an important part of the sound - but as it is, to me it's nothing special. It makes only a handfull of different noises, and people have been more creative with it in the last 20 or so years than I'll ever be (6IE.6R pretty much putting the last nail in the coffin), so I'm happy to explore other means of making percussion sounds. And that's my full statement, acid police! I guess it's time to go to the hanging tree now... If you can't hear that and don't see how they can be so good for your music than I can't help you. Its about variety. Sure the 808 sounds great. Can you please post a sample of your 606 sounding like an 808? I've heard the samples on the various modder's sites, and they all just sound like a nice factory tuned drum sound being "deconstructed" into its component buzzes and bleeps. I.e. like shit. Its one of the best fucking drum machines ive ever played with. Imagine a 909 & 808 clone in one box that has a lot more knobs to tweak the sounds. It does a dead-on 909 impression but the 808 sounds it is capable of don't sound exactly like an 808 but they are damn good. i just picked one up myself for $500 and am quite happy with it. If you want an 808 specific sound you should probably buy an 808 , but in general if you just want good live controls, midi in/out, and really nice bassy analog kicks & snares you can pay less than half an 808 and get a much better machine. I'll see your XBase 09, and rase you an XBase 999: These go for nearly as much as a real 808, but they do a whole lot more. They have a full set of lo fi "percussion" samples from 808, 909 and CR78, PLUS you can load in your own 8bit samples and run them through the analogue EG and LPF. It's also designed to be your master sequencer in your rig, controlling all your other acid boxes. One of my complaints about the normal 09 is the snare drum sounds inescapably like a 909 snare. Do you own a 999? What other currently made or non roland analog drum machines would you recommend besides the Jomox line? Guest Last post by
I have an AirBase 99. The rack unit with all the sounds of the 999 less adding your own samples. Yeah, it's hard to get the snare to do the beefy 808 "slap", but with individual outs you can give it its own track and beef it up with EQ and a bit of desk overdrive. I think the JoMoX is the best modern analogue drumbox out there. There's talk of a DIY 808 clone similar to the x0xb0x, and I would be signing up for that puppy if and when. The only other modern option is the Vermona DRM1 / MAM ADX1. These are tweaky modularish things with no patch storage and no claim to x0x emulation. I imagine they'd be pretty hellish as your main beat box, but a lot of fun in addition to something a bit more productive. The Vermona is also the only modern analogue with analogue hats and clap. I have a 606 which I bought for the hats, but I use it for the snare as well. When you say they are modularish do they have some sort of matrix or patch-bay ? The ones ive seen just have a shit load of knobs but ive only looked at one of them. have you ever played with the simmons bassdrum/tom/snare modules? SOme of the sounds on those evoke serious 80s memories. The HBO movie intro music seems like it was made with a simmons unit. Guest Last post by
Simmons sounds are piss easy to get with samples tho. And yeah, lots of cultural baggage there. marf
Here is my new modded 606 It has a wonderful midi retrofit with velocity. Velocity is not too common. I basically see it as a source for another snare amd mostly a variety of different hats. I can do triplets and such with the midi. Or lfo patterns on the hats because of the velocity. I wish I could get a cv control. marf
Its still in England with the tech. When I get it back I'll put up some samples. If I can figure out a way to record it as I don't have a decent soundcard. So it might sound like shit. Not midi TO cv. i think then your breakout box would be bigger than the 606. also, the cv ins would be getting converted to digital internally, so you might as well just do the cv-midi thing. marf
It changes the sounds. I don't need a midi to cv thing. I got midi retro fitted w/ velocity. Im not a huge fan of midi though. As far as cv, the guy who did the mod thought it could be done with vactrols ..Light senstive leds.
